What is the average cost per ft. of a masonary chimney? I am switching over this spring after using a SWG power venter for 6 seasons.
Are you looking to hire someone or do it yourself? Brick? Block? Single flue? There are a few variables to your question. I'm assuming your starting new so you'll have some minor excavation and backfilling, footer, and foundation penetrations for a crock and cleanout. To break it down in a per ft cost, you can easily get $100/ft and up from there.
Mine cost me $2,400.00 last summer( 32'), I dug the hole and poured the footings myself. Materials were around $800.00 for block, flue pipe, morter, brick, clean out, thimble and SS chimney cap. Mason was $1,400.00 and around $200.00 to cut the concrete hole for the thimble and cleanout door. Get prices from all the local lumber yards and masonary companys, everyone's looking for business now. I'm sure you could find a good mason who's willing to give you a good deal for $$$ .bigbuck200 wrote:What is the average cost per ft. of a masonary chimney? My buddy does chimney's and told me over the phone about 2K without even looking. Since I know him well, I plan on helping and getting that price down more. The height is about 25 feet.vtec350 wrote:Mine cost me $2,400.00 last summer( 32'), I dug the hole and poured the footings myself. I would be interested is hearing a few more people coment on the cost of a Chimney. I am trying to weight out the options between power vent ond just installing a flu
I paid about $500ish for materials. I had to go back and buy some more tiles.( They break easy in a trailer). My buddy built it. I was the laborer. Took us 3 12 hour days. 45 feet from the footer to the chimney cap. Through three floors. Had to be careful in the house. I didn't want to make the wife mad. Its block. I still need to brick the two sides that are open. Looks ugly right now. I paid him $200. Actually I had to sneak the cash into his truck console because he wouldn't take any money.
I've got about 600 or so in mine. It's about 32 feet from footer to peak. I did all of the work myself. That price didn't include the diamond blade and long masonry bit I bought to do the work. I learned one thing doing that project. I can say I built ONE chimney. There won't be a second.
I recently had an estimate to replace an exterior masonry chimney. Some of the tiles are coming loose and cracks are developing.
It's about 30 feet tall.
The estimate was about $4000 to tear down the old, rebuild the footer, rebuild the new, and haul away the debris.

I did my own block chimney. Less than a grand in materials for a 16'.
I could say the same Bill, but I word it differently.... "I have built two chimneys, first and last !"billw wrote:I can say I built ONE chimney. There won't be a second.
I had 2 fireplaces and a 3 flue chimney built when I built my house and the cost was $12,000. It is 9ft wide and 3ft deep faced on 3 sides all the way to the roof and then faced on four sides above the roof with hand cut stone. It is a thing of beauty. So you can see that you can spend a little or a lot depending on what you want.
