Does the build up of fly ash on the inside of a furnace,I have an Alaska 140, act as an insulator and decrease heat transfer? Planning on shutting it down Staurday to do some maintenace and wonder about cleaning the inside.

Yup to a certain extent, you should clean it out about once a month or so, depending on the ash content of your coal.

I have a DV & I can tell by feeling the temp difference between the top & bottom of the vent pipe when the ash is building up. Bottom cool & top hot, it`s time to clean out some fly-ash.
