In the last 2 winters we spent about $2,500 on oil and $500 ($100 per month * 5 months) in electricity for suplemental electric space heaters. The house was kept at 68 degrees max. Total heating bill equaled $3,000 per season. With the cost of oil where it is now I estimate that I would have spent $2,000 for oil this season.

Bought a Keystoker KAA-2 and installed it in October. We will burn about 5.5 Tons of coal at $325 a ton for this season for a seasonal heating bill of $1787.50. The house is kept at 72 degrees minimum and the heat is much more steady, consistent and comfortable.

Investments

Keystoker KAA-2 $3,800.00
Installation $ 800.00
New chimney this spring $600
Total Investment $5,2000

Payback period with oil at its current price is about 7 years but I do not believe that oil will stay at this price so I expect my real payback will be more like 4 years.

But to be honest with you if I never got a payback I would still have installed the boiler because I am not paying the ARABS for their oil to heat my house. I am paying Americans for the energy to heat my house.

ZERO payback time! I used my federal refund to buy a new stove last week! Ahhh...the wonders of online tax filing and automatic deposit!

In actuality, I figure about 5 years to break even against natural gas and my high efficiency, 9 year old furnace. But it's really hard to determine, as my budget billing from the gas company has gone from $116 Jul-Dec, to $86 Dec-Jan and now the bill is $55! Recognize, too, that I have literally been 'freezing my butt off' all winter heating only 3 rooms to 55 when sleeping or gone, and 65 when I'm up and around. I'm planning on 68-70 with coal, but I know I'll STILL be ahead of the game when the gas company prices head for the moon!!!

Recouped all my investment in 2 1/2 years. There is nothing like burning coal and "sticking it to the man"! I used to burn oil and even with an new efficient furnace it was costing me around $ 6000 per year. Now I spend @ $1400 per heating season with coal. I love when the boiler runs and I spend much time in the furnace room. I never spent any time there when I was buring oil.

hmmmm...... I wanted to move my oil boiler into another flue so I could tuck the KA-4 back by the wall so my costs were a bit more then they needed to be. Also, I wanted my heating system redesigned to accommodate a P/S system with multiple boilers and also be "radiant ready" when the addition goes on. My whole system was 3/4" copper before. I'll just include that cost in here as well since I don't have a way of itemizing it.

Chimney work = $450 ($250 for 12" hole cut, $200 for thimble installed and old 6" hole filled.
Boiler install = $3859 (includes new pumps, all 1-1/4" copper, 2 boilers installed (old oil was moved and new coal was installed, indirect tank was moved, Taco controls including dual stage controller)
Used Boiler = $1600 (thanks Dave)
No More oil = PRICELESS
________________________________
Total = $5909

Coal - 4 tons = $1040 ($260/ton; I estimate that the current size of my house and our HW usage we'll use about 4 tons per year ALL YEAR :D )

We only used oil our first winter in the house then when oil shot up to $2/gallon in 2005  I freaked out and bought a coal stove. I don't really know how much oil we used to use. I would say ~600-700 gallons/year. 1090sq ft RR w/ no finished lower.

If oil stays at $2/gallon the payoff would be about 30 years. When oil gets to $3/gallon the payoff would be less then 8 years. When oil gets to $4/gallon the payoff would be 4 years. (assumes coal price stays @260/ton and that I use 600 gallons)

I could have done this install cheaper if money was the only factor, but the upcoming addition on my house caused me to increase cost to make things work better for the long haul since I'm not leaving this house until I die.
