I think ACTIVE topics is ones that have so many posts?

NEW are new topics/replies since the last time you logged on? Something like that.

I always use the NEW button to see all the new replies/topics.

This help?

The differences are suttle.

"Active" is simply very long list of all recent topics.

"New" is a shorter list based on your last active session, I think it's set to 60 minutes. If you don't view anything in 60 minutes then it will reset and only those topics you have not viewed since your last session will appear.

Edit: For example.... if you logged out you'll end the session by default. If you logged back in immediately and checked new you'll get no results...
