The RR tracks are private property so you will be trespassing if you go there. They do have RR police that patrol them but usually in areas where they have problems with ATV's ripping the bed up... Having said that other than doing it for fun you're not going to get much coal that way unless you find some really old unused tracks.

Should rent a 6x12 U-Haul tandem and have a bin in back. I once hauled a 63' Austin Mini Cooper S out to New York from Michigan in one.
So I know it would carry the weight. I'm going to pick up this grain Auger so loading and unloading wouldn't be too difficult. http://www.hayspear.com/product/LU_BTA_4_12/Four_ ... _Flow.html

Yet with the open trailer I could just have then dump in 3 Tons.

what auger size diameter and length are you buying how much for the motor ? they say the motor is not included. looks like a great idea, it would be great to flip a switch and have my hopper filled in a few minutes!!!!!!!!!!!

I get coal with 5 gal pails .Usually about 20/25 a clip Find a commercial painter they have tons of pails they will gladly give you free.
If you took the seat out and got 50 pails in it there is your ton.
They weigh your vehicle when you drive in and weigh it on the way out.
$160/70 a ton beats bagged at bargin price of 5.25 about 260 a ton which is a whole lot less than up 10.80 a bag here for blashak :o

I figure I can put a simple 2x4 frame together and Line it with a blue trap. The area in the back of a Suburban with the 3rd row removed is a little larger then 4x5. So I'll frame in an open box 4x5x1.5 or so and just shove in roughly 30 Cubic feet or .75 Ton.

I'll see if I can round up enough buckets though that would be easier..

Heck I had the fork lift drop a 2400 lb pallet of bagged in the back on 2 occasions. I guess it's more of an adventure then anything, my son will love seeing the big dump trucks :o Hope they are open on Monday even though it is a Holiday...

Also So which Breaker have Deep Mined coal, What the best value in you opinion, Superior?
UAE Harmony Mine Or Superior will have Deep mine coal Sherman will have a mix of both .
Best Value do you mean BTU Or ASH Content if it is ash content UAE will be the best If it is BTU the Superior
UAE 145.00 a ton Superior 160 a ton Call before you go .

The U haul 6x12 twin axel. If you put on 30" plywood front back & sides will hold 4.5 tons with out any problem's the tires x 4 are rated for 2800 or 2900lbs can't remember took several members with that same trailer to coal breaker many times No problem One member comes down from CT. That would be the best thing to do . Don't forget
Tiedowns & Tarp to cover the load State law on Highway .

Watch state license laws and max towing wieght. If your trailer is over 10,000 lbs gross, you need a CDL license to be legal. If the twin axel trailer is 2500 lbs empty, you can only haul 7500 lbs (3.75 tons) of coal without going overweight. Also, make sure your vehicle brakes can handle this load. There are other threads with words of caution about hauling heavy trailers.

True, its not so much being able to tow the Heavy trailer as it is Stopping it. These trailers have surge brakes which is nice but electrics are better. It's just the 1500 Suburban not the 2500 which are more beefed up. But I'd hate to admit the Boats I've towed with less. I towed a 24' Grady White back from the Jersey Shore with an Envoy, just went real easy on it, stopped often, and keep it at 55mph. No hills like I'd see in PA...

I think I'll do the 5 gal buckets for now and checked out the whole Idea of self pick up. If the trip is not so bad then this spring I may make a run with the trailer other wise I'll call up a an have a triaxle deliver. Most breakers are 150-160 miles from here, So one 6 hour trip a season may not be so bad.

Well Monday I stopped by Sherman Co. and filled up Buckets with 1200 lb's I have to say it was very easy. Only took about 20 min's. The guys were very friendly and helpful, looking at a Trailer with 5 tons this spring/Summer. 155 a Ton is better then 280 bagged. They Are very continently located right off the exit ramp.

I took pictures and will post tonight.

Thanks coal berner for all the info, I really appreciate your help.

Hey so here are the pictures, I didn't get a chance to resize them so you can follow the link to the album.

Nothing like a family trip to the Coal Breaker.
