EFM sold, when and why

EFM sold, when and why

PostBy: pine grove coal user On: Sun Sep 30, 2012 9:36 pm

As a history buff, I enjoy reading about anything related to coal.
I have read all the histories of EFM and have not seen much on the when and why EFM was sold and ended up in Schuylkill Haven.
Could the company historian enlighten me?

I may be wrong but I don't think the move to Schuylkill Haven was because of ownership change, the Emmaus facility only housed the sales office until recently. I know there is a history from a man named Richard Strouse who recently passed not sure if this is the complete history he made:

efm Company History by Richard Strouse

I know he passed because the Emmaus historical society recently sent me images of some the newer Trivets. Stoker man provided the images up to 2007 .

Not the historian here, but here's what I know: The owner of EFM passed away last year and either it was sold or consolidated with a company that was known as Thermo Dynamics located on Rt 61 in Schuylkill Haven. Hope that helps for now.

Now for a funny story. In 1976, I was searching for a job as I had just dropped out of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University when I learned I wasn't able to get behind the yoke until the Spring semester because the school had over suscribed students. As a impatient young lad my future as a pilot was in disarray. Thank God I left because the job market for pilots hit rock bottom as Vietnam pilots were prime choice so I would have been in debt like a current college grad with no prospects for a job.

I applied for a welder trainee job at Thermo Dynamics, got called for the interview, was handed a ark welder for a test and just like the guy in the Allstate commericial I had no clue what to do with the stick. In fact, it was the first time I ever had a helmut on and I might as well have welded the guy giving me the test for all that I could see out of the shield.

I ended up getting my pilots license and did much better under the instrument training hood however. Never touched a ark welder since and I don't ever intend to!

The manufacturing facility at least since about 2008 was in Schuykill Haven. I don't know when it originally moved there. Stoker man will have the information.

They have been updating their website. I see they also added the WCB hand-fired boiler which is larger than the old model.

Everything remains the same. The company setup hasn't changed since the late 1990s.

Why did they move from Emmaus to Schuylkill Haven?

Now we are getting somewhere! When did Thermo Dynamics buy EFM? A previous post said the EFM owner died last year. I'm confused....

There are multiple companies and are family-owned.
