well i have decided to install the boiler. shutting down the mark III Friday and installing the boiler Friday night. if everything goes well i should have it running Saturday after noon. pictures of the final install soon. everything has been gone over with a fine tooth comb. sand blasted the whole thing. i used rustoleum (hope i spelled that right) high temp satin black for the high temp items. and i used base coat clear coat for the covers. new controls too. my basement is full of finished parts ready to be installed.

question??? is there anyone that i can contact about help on the setup for the running. any tips or tricks would be a great help. any one else running a losch please drop me a line

It's alive!!!

The match was struck at 7:32 Pm Saturday. i love it! the house is 72 and the boiler is just idling along. the only hitch in the works was at 2 am when the triple auquastat let the smoke out, bad relay. but never fear i had a spare one. i doubled up on the controls. plan for the worst and pray for the best. but being from the school of hard knocks i always think ahead. picture of the install will be posted soon. after 49 hours straight i am going to call it a night. i keep checking on it like it's my first born. well i came home to an out fire... well at least i had a out fire auquastat installed. fired it back up and it made temp in 18 minutes. getting the timer set right is going to be the hard part. as for the temp setting high is 180 high limit stat is set to 200"i found out that 210, the blow off pushes some water". low is set to 160 and the out fire is set to 140. and the differential is 15.

i am happy even with the out fire that the boiler is just a little bigger than i need for this house. this boiler would really shine if it was use for radiant heating.

What are you using for a timer setting? Did you call Losch and ask for some baseline settings?

Sounds like your expansion tank is undersized if the relief popped at 210F.

well john wasn't much help other than the set up of the grate. for that i am eternally great full for the info. the expansion tank is just at the rating. found out tonight that the relief is venting at a temp of around 220 (at least the ir temp gun say so). i just don't have enough load on the boiler. i am learning the hard way, on the settings. its like a new old car you half to find out what the quarks are before you can make adjustments.


i all so found out that the zone in the basement is heating the whole house to 74 with the stats set at 72. i am turning down the stat in the basement to 68 to see if that helps.

buy the way the wife likes the 45 min shower she took today.

What are you running for a timer cycle?

right now i have it set for 45 sec every 10 mins.

Try running the timer every 15 minutes, if the fire goes out...back to 10, but shorten the cycle to 30 seconds. Sooner or later you will find a balance between outfires and overheating.

Are you burning rice?

burning over sized rice. i started out at 30 s at 15 min and moved it back over a 4 hour normal running. i am at 45 s because i don't see life in the bed at 30 s getting a lot of unburnt coal. i am not complaining about the unburnt coal i am using 1/5 of the coal i was using in the hand fired. i went from a 75-100 lbs a day to 15 to 25 lbs "guessing here it's a three gallon bucket".

i am looking in to getting a bigger expansion tank. going to stop down and get the spec's on the tanks and get the next size bigger. over sized is better than just right.

i am all so seeing a diffidence in the temp of the house compared to the oil boiler. i think it has to the hug thermal mass sitting in the basement. getting radiation from the boiler heating the house too. i have the covers installed with new insulation.

i would like to know why these boilers went out of production. from what i have rebuilt its built like a tank before i got to it. i wonder how many of these boilers met with the scrap hep just because someone wanted to turn a dial and forget it.

i should be a pro at this by next fall. i plan on running all year.

You are correct about the thermal mass in the basement, it will completely change the "feel" in the house.

well after 10 days of use........... well i have no draft when its above 30. co2 alarm is not being kind to me. i love it when it goes off two or three times a night. makes for a sound nights sleep wondering if it's going to go off again. i have ordered a draft inducer. it will be here Friday. installed bigger expansion tank. it doesn't over shoot the pressure when it gets hot now.

OK pros and cons. its going to take me some time to get the settings right. coal consumption is low i started weighing the amount of coal going in. 20 to 30 lbs in 36 hours at current outside temps. i am sure it will go up when it gets colder. temp over shoots. timing is the issue. i think i am going to have to come up with some sort of smart system, like the one i have seen from another forum user. well i can say that i am becoming very well at firing it back up. out fires.

If you had better draft, you could reduce the timer cycles. What is the story with the chimney? Too short?

well the chimney is three feet above the roof line. it has a good draft most of the time. when there isn't much call for heat it drops to almost nothing. when i was burning wood i have a good draft "never measured". when having the hand fired i had .03 to 1.3 . so i installed the baro to keep it at .04. i think that the chimney isn't getting the heat. its staying in the boiler and not going up the chimney. at full call it never got above 150 at the stove pipe. i do have a manometer installed at full call i have .04 and the baro just starts to tick not really moving. so i don't think i will have a problem in the winter. well bellow 30 i think. so i need to induce the draft for the warmer times.

on another note i have tried to seal the base as good as i can, but the pipes going through the base for the grate? i really don't have a clue what to do there.

Since you upgraded the expansion tank, have you tried running the boiler a little warmer to see if helps the draft?

Do those pipes going to through the base to the grate move/vibrate? My first thought was boiler putty or high-temp silicone, but that won't work if the pieps move. The closest I have come to a Losch is you pictures, so I don't know what moves and what doesn't.
