Dual heat Thermostats

Dual heat Thermostats

PostBy: RS7 On: Wed Nov 07, 2012 5:06 pm

I am looking to purchase a dual heal thermostat to run a Alaska coal stocker and an oil furnace. I am using the coal stove as my primary heat and would like to have the oil furnace on the same thermostat in case I am away from my house and I run out of coal in the hopper and the fire goes out and then the oil furnace would come on. Currently I only have a tstat for the oil furnace and it is like a $60 Honeywell one from home depot. Anyone have any suggestions to what tstat I should get to hook both up? Thanks.

"Dual" t stats as you wish for are [expensive] Dual headaches

simply set the tstat of the OB to say 55 or 60 and the coal appliance at your normal dwelling temp 65-70 or higher if you wish -- your hauling the coal

should you loose fire on the solid fuel heater thing -- the temp will drop in the house and the back up OB will gracefully and safely pick up the load until you address the drama.

think about it -- what if the fault is the dual tstat???? With a redundant system and separation - your chances of failure are cut significantly

Kind Regards

I agree with Sting, just get a separate thermostat for the coal unit and enjoy.

I use 2 of the same brand thermostats, a couple inches apart. Set one lower as backup. Funny with mine, they read 1.5 degrees room temp different :?

For situations like this I use a Heat Pump Thermostat. (2 stage heat)

I thought about having two different tstats but I didn't want to have them next to one another. It was more of an appeal thing since My current tstat is in the living room.

you want a headache
Have you lifted the old Stat and confirmed that you have the necessary extra wires -- Or will you have to fish a new cable anyway
