Why is your air so high? 4 on the air should be enough. If your water jacket isn't extracting the heat from the fire, your stack will be higher. Also, is the baffle in place? Is the draft regulator set right?

With that much air and a long burn, 450F is possible...especially if the boiler is due for a cleaning.

My last batch of rice had a lot of small pieces, and required about 4.75 on the air to get a proper ash ring with 4 teeth of feed. On a long burn I could see 425F on the stack.

Have you checked the stoker for air leaks? Is the coal on the small side or unusually slow burning?

stoker was cleaned in september, i am burning rice it look like normal size, rice looks great, all the rice is the same size no big or too little chunks, with 4.5 air i get unburt coal with 5.5 i get really great results. rice does seem like it packs more to answer ur question rob. what should a normal stack temp be and will this be harmfull in the long run. i think normal is around 350 right. YES the baffle is in place, also temp was measured before baro, baro set to 2

You should adjust the air to keep a 1.5-2" ash ring around the fire during a long burn (30+ minutes). Do not try and eliminate all black from the ash.

Boy, there doesn't seem to be much carbon left in those ashes! Any chance you can get a picture of the fire after the next long burn?

According to the thread they started a while back, they take orders of 20 tons or larger.

Thanks Rob and Ryan for the info. I live on top of the mountain so close to lehigh anthracite I can hear the equipment operating from my backyard. And I didn't know I could purchase their coal , they always had the best coal .I have enough coal for the winter, this summer I will order 20 ton if that what it takes.Coal bin holds 8 ton I guess a large tarp will do.
