They are both on the boiler. One wasn't enough to keep the pressure stable. The oil boiler originally had a steel compression tank up in the ceiling joists, but that was replaced at some point. Whoever did the work installed an Extrol in its place. When I bought the house that Extrol was water-logged, and I read that the tanks shouldn't be on their side. Without a lot of repiping, it was easiest to mount them on the floor. Each tank sits on a 6" PVC coupler to keep it off the floor. Now that I am a few years wiser...I should have just bought a commercial floor mounted Extrol tank.

When you price that commercial tank, you will figure out that your current installation is just fine.

Valves are a must on the expansion tank in my book.

I should have just said floor-mounted tank, I was looking at one of these: http://www.pexuniverse.com/amtrol-extro ... nsion-tank

I just used one on my Uncle's DF520 and it worked out very well.

Looks like expansion tank manufacturers are also getting tips from GM ... :no1:

I've been around oil boilers my entire life & have never seen an expansion tank fail that way. Usually the bladder inside fails & it becomes waterlogged ... after 40 years or so of service. Mine is 15 years old now, albeit quite a bit smaller than that - about half the size. But that shouldn't matter ....

I just called the supply house, you were correct. 5 year warranty, they said stop by to pick up the new one.

Here we are a year later, and my second expansion tank from 2009 has the same failure. Either both of the tanks I bought in 2009 had the same issue, or there is something wrong with my system causing the tanks to fail. Water isn't acidic, most of the system is iron or copper with some O2-barrier pex, and the make-up water has been valved off since the boiler was filled.

Of course this particular tank was purchased from the guy that serviced our oil boiler, and I don't think he is in business anymore...so I'm probably S.O.L. on the warranty. I might give Amtrol a call and see what they think.

In the meantime I replaced the tank with the warranty replacement I got last December.

Shouldn't matter where you bought it from - it's up to the manufacturer to honor their warranty.

I went through this with my RAB motion light. Since the light is only "supposed" to be sold to and by licensed electricians, and I bought it off eBay, nobody around here would touch it with a 10' pole. I called RAB direct, and no questions asked, they sent out a new motion sensor in 2 days! :) Great customer service there.

Subarus or Kias to make that bunch of tanks.

No that is Jeep liberty recycling, my Kia is 2004 and completely rust free. I suppose in NH you all think cars only come from Detroit - YES!

HAHAHAHAHA - I slay myself.
