Glenwood No 9 Base Burner-(hopefully) a few photos

Yep no worries. William and I are cut from the same 100 or so year old cloth. If the period is possible and it's as good or superior that's what you'll see. In my case, I think I'm a recently reincarnated soul from around that era, since it's so comfortable for me.

I love anything old and historical. The old Lazy Boy was just too comfortable. I had to take it with me. I want to eventually when I get this house paid down a bit more buy and move into a home built in the 1920's or older. There is one for sale about 3 hours North from me built in 1795, but I just can't do it now.

Yep I hear you Bud. This one of mine is 226 years old this year (the main house) and is still in pretty good nick. You can see it was built by shipwrights as the Gables upstairs in the bedrooms make one feel like you're in the hold of a ship. While you have constant maint to do, if you keep up with it, you won't have any big problems. I like the fact that this place has "lived" this long and come through everything and weather thrown at it. The many generations of people that lived here all left their mark in some way too. Where ever one is comfortable and at peace is home. That's for sure.

No big news except I have the day off tomorrow and the pipe is going up. If the long range forecast is reasonably accurate, it will be time for a few overnight chill knockers in the stove by next week.

Here too William. As the ad's of the day would state "A couple of newspapers, a handful of kindling and a few cobs or scraps will take the chill off" Have to scavenge the compost pile and throw those cobs onto my little wood pile .

I just lit it up earlier. It's quite windy up here on the hill and going down to around 20 or so. I am extremely pleased with this stove. It has proven to be extremely effective and efficient. It's amazing that it can be set to run at very low temperatures (200-300) and the fire will burn at the same low rate until every scrap of coal is burned up. Once lit it will not go out unless it has not been fed. Any fuel in the fire pot will remain burning until all is consumed. It burns a beautiful fire, the blue flames last well after the coal bed has all turned to red-orange. It's very pretty.

Do you have yours up and running yet?

William, I was looking back a couple pages and noticed your hearth the stove is located, if you get a chance can you measure from the corner out along each wall and let me know what it is ?

I will be firing up the Magee for the first time this weekend!

I cannot believe that it has been almost two years since I picked up the stove. It is pretty pathetic that it has taken me this long to restore it but the end is near!!

I just have to finish installing a used Metalbestos chimney that I found on Craigslist which I will start on first thing Saturday morning and just insert the mica and put on a final coat of polish. Then I will be running for the matches! lol

I truly cannot wait to sit next a warm stove on Sunday morning.

Bill, That's outstanding! I'll be that you did a super job on the restoration too! Got pix? What size is the Magee by the way, is it a 12" like it's name or larger pot? It's a great looking Base Burner.

The fire pot is 14" wide without the liner and 12" deep.

Well I finally lit my first hand fired coal stove on Christmas! The stove was built in 1912 so I had to finish the job this year!

One match, some small scraps of wood and about 20 lbs of coal the Magee took right off. The stove was running at about 300* for the first 2 hours in direct draft mode and then I swapped over to baseburner mode. The stove temp rose to about 325* and the lower base unit of the stove heated right up from 110 to about 250* The flue temp dropped from 180* to about 105 degrees. The stove ran at a steady 325* for the next 22 hours straight without touching a thing. My 17 year old son kept an eye on the stove while I was at work and called me throughout the day with updates letting me know that nothing had changed . I came home from work to find the the stove still burning and the temps about the same as the night before. I shook the stove down and filled the fire pot this time right to the top and got another 24 hours and came home tonight with a third full fire pot and dancing blue ladies.

Excellent !!! There is no touching these stoves when it comes to efficiency. One of the things people that don't have these stoves realize is the ability they have to run at a CONSTANT temperature all throughout the burn cycle. Not only at high temperatures, but low temperatures as well. Not too many stoves can run at a steady output for that long on 20 pounds of coal. When I first got the Glenwood and discovered this I was blown away. Please show us some pictures and let us know how you are doing as you learn about the nuances of the stove.

Since it is 1 degree outside right now, the Our Glenwood No 9 is doing its part to keep my home extremely warm and comfortable.
Temperature on the barrel 450 degrees, 118 degrees on the stove pipe two feet above the stove.

william..... with this extremely cold weather we are having you have to be in Glenwood heaven with those stoves you have there.
