Fireplace coal?

Hi; I'm new. Can fireplace coal be burned in any fireplace/insert? Can someone talk me through the procedure? What size coal works best? Do you have to knock the ash off periodically? Any CO issues? Thank you

If you want to try it, use only a small amount of it until you see what it does. Start with a wood fire then add a lump or two. Then see what happens. don't close the glass while burning it, just close the screens. If you close off all the air it will start to puff back on you. Fireplace I.E. cannel coal needs PLENTY of air to burn. It also makes a LOT of smoke for your neighbors to enjoy!!!!
