The other morning going to work at 6 am, I was passing thru Coatsville Pa. and at the steel mill there crossing the road was a big off road dump truck carring 3 huge pieces of glowing slag(i would pressume) it reminded me the huge clinkers.I wish I turned around and took a picture of the truck and the orange glowing load.

I blame obama for my clinkers ! He's purposely putting them in .. I'm sure of it.

I've been pretty lucky, I really havent had any trouble with clinkers. Got my first decent sized one the other day when it was real windy. The stove was really cookin', even with the MPD fully closed, and the primary air at only 1/2 turn.

This was with UAE Harmony nut that I picked up a couple of weeks ago.

That's crazy! I've only gotten little ones that I'm able to grind up in the grates. I wouldn't even know how to remove something that size without letting the fire go out.

And this, my friend, is why I recommend a Barometric damper on most instalations !! What if that wind came up while you were away for 8 hours?? and the stove 'got really cookin' while you were gone??

The fire had burned down a lot more than I had anticipated. I just put my stove gloves on and grabbed it.

Yes, this has been a concern. When I first installed the stove at the beginning of the season, I thought I'd be burning more wood, hence keeping the MPD. Of course, now I've got the coal bug, and I don't see going back to full time wood burning. I'm going to ride out the rest of the season with the current setup, and I'm looking to get a new stove and stove pipe, and baro for next year.

I've had my hand in the fire with my welding gloves on too. But not to remove anything, it's usually to put stuff in.

went to shake and the stud on the end of the shaker grate broke right off....clean?

anyone with this type of stove Vogelzang, Noresman 2500 who burns anthicite have this problem?

These castings are from China. Maybe its heat, weight, or both.

Should I get this repaired? Buy replacement grates? Both.

Build a shallow coal fire? Don't mind a shorter burn time, or more tending. I just want predictability.

Thanks for everything NEPA..... I am grateful and will not give up. Will keep trying this and personalizing my coal burning performance. Got to.

Lou - You might be better off to start a new thread on this, more folks will be able to see your issue

I would start a new thread Ludlowlou. Those are rather cheaply made as you mentioned. That sucks and you will need to replace or repair if you are going to keep it. Running a shallow bed is not an option. You need to be a ble to fill the stove completely and shake it. You always want full capacity. You can run it lower for longer or hotter for less time but coal stoves always run best on a full load. You're thinking like a wood burner still. It will pass.
