Can't get enough heat! Please help

PostBy: Dudleymass On: Fri Jan 04, 2013 2:32 pm

Have a US stove Ashely wood/coal 1602R. Can;t seem to get the hear to start the blower going. I have triad many different settings. Tried leave bottom door open as well and running the forced blower. still having a hard time. I only have 2 bends in the pipe, but it may be a draft issue. I may also need more coal in the hopper? Any wisdom is appricited. I have attached a few pics.

HI Steve, welcome to nepacrossroads. How much coal are you putting in the firebox?

Thank you Rob, I appriciate your help. I start with a few scoops on a wood fire, then keep adding. Today i started at about 9:00Am and have gone through about 1/2 a 50 lb bag.

That is not nearly enough coal. Anthracite burns as a "team effort", and needs a deep bed to burn properly. I assume you are burning nut size coal? The coal needs to cover the entire grate so the air can't bypass it, and the coal needs to be at least 6" deep. 8" is better.

If you already have a fire established, go ahead and fill part of the firebox right up to the top of the firebrick. Once that coal is burning well, fill about 80% of the firebox up to the same level - leave some burning coal exposed to help burn off the gasses. Once all the coal is burning with blue flames, top it off so the entire firebox is full. NOW you will be ready to make some serious heat.

Be careful, don't leave it unattended with the ash pan door open or the combustion air feeds wide open because it very well could get dangerously hot. Once you get blue flames on top close any over the fire air inlets down to about 10% and control heat output from the primary air feed under the fire :) If you previously burned wood, the same rules don't apply. Coal is a different animal..

This thread should help you to burn coal in that stove.

successfully burning anthracite coal in a clayton furnace

I'd imagine the Ashley is nearly identical to the Clayton 1600.

Does that furnace have the V shaped fire box with the two inline grates? OR is it more square with steep walls with several small grates parallel to each other?

Thanks, I did actually put in the air return as well. So far so good, the only problem i am having now is the limiter switch keeps shutting down the blowers on me. For some reson the manual override button is missing as well, i'll be going to home depot tommoorw.

Take the cover off and turn the temp points down so the blower will stay on longer. You may need to do some experimenting/fiddling to figure it out.

I just noticed the sign in the first picture, I dunno what it means but it made me chuckle

it's a stainless teel sheet i insert in the return air box in the summer so my oil furnace does not draw return air from the coal. I also have an oil furnace that was in the house when I bought it. It says "summer damper" not dumper :0
