Old Mill Stoker with a Coal Trol...First Burn

When I use the FEED setting to start the fire I get a good burn going, however after it counts down and goes into normal operation the fire goes out.

Any suggestions?

Feed motor needs adjusting...although it is moving...no feed

maybe the feed motor RPM is very very slow, so you need to bump up the MIN settings.
What is you MIN and MAX setting?

well...I unplug the Coal Trol and plugged in the feed motor directly (fire out) and took all the coal out of the bin...then I watched the pusher moving, but it wasn't moving much coal..so i have been adjusting the arm a bit and it seems to be getting better..I am now pushing coal onto the grate.

I had my Min setting at 4, and Max at 40.
I then also had Min at 6, and Max at 20.

I was just moving them around to see if there was a change..I don't think the Coal Trol is the problem at this point. I believe it it the Arm.

It is a little confusing using a Coal-Trol with an adjustable feeder. Best bet is to put the menu in "setup" run the stove at min 6 after lighting and adjust the feeder to acheive a 1" fire on the grate after the initial load of coal burns down. After that lock the feed adjustment in place and set the control to max and increase the number until you have a full fire with no red coals falling off. After that is done you can now simply set the temp and put coal in take ash away.

Thanks Matthaus for the advice. The problem was the adjustable feeder. It was not pushing any coal onto the grate at all. Now I think i have it working right and I will put it back into its test burn tomorrow and tweak as advised.

The pic is showing the grate after about 15 minutes of feed.

I have been tweaking the Stove and the Coal Trol most of the week so a minimum fire can be maintained.

1. The first issue encountered was the feed mechanism on the stove.

Using the Coal Trol minimum burn settings, The Old Mill was not able to maintain a burn for more than 4 hours. I tested the feed motor separately by plugging it directly to the outlet and eventually set the manual adjustment to where it would get a maximum feed

Once I had the Maximum feed rate manually adjusted on the stove, I figured I could now use the Coal Trol to vary my feed rate.

2. The second issue encountered was that the default setting for the Coal Trol would not work with the Old Mill.

I realize that the default settings are just a starting point. however I figured they would be close enough to where I needed to be. The feed assembly really needs to be moving more than the default settings allowed in order for there to be a fair amount of coal on the grate.

I timed what Min = 6 actually was since I did not know. I estimated it to be about 7 seconds on and 1:52 off.

This setting was not pushing nearly enough coal on the grate to keep the fire going. So I went through all of the scenarios timing each one. I settled on Min=20. Min=20 would give me 23 seconds on, and 1:32 off.

I have been burning for 24 hours now with this setting.

After reviewing the photos I had posted and looking at the Ash Pan, I think I may need to adjust back the Min setting. Based on the photo, I may be pushing a little too much and therefore I am getting some unburt coal along the edges.

I have adjusted to Min=18 to see if I can get rid of the arch.

This Photo is after adjusting to Min=18. I seemed to have eliminated the arch and it appears all of the coal is burned.

That looks pretty good for a minimum burn.

Now set your maximum burn to get the coal burning to within 1" of the end of the grate so it is not pushing burning coal off the end of the grate and you should be all set.

Then you can just sit back and relax. :beer:

Thanks...I'm going to wait until it gets a little colder to set the MAX....considering its 55 degrees out and it is already 72 inside.

Looking good. To my knowledge we've never had someone install on an Old Mill stoker before. The defaults vary by stoker maker/type. In the user manual there is a grid showing different recommended defaults for various stoves/brands. In your case, it is going to be a process, as you're finding out.
