Slowing down a swg4 hd power venter ?

Is there a different motor or fan impeller that can be installed to make them draw less air ? On the lowest setting of the rheostat, that will not cause the motor to stall or overheat causing loss of draft, the venter still draws way to much air. To achieve .03 to . 05 the damper is almost completely open. Are the motors in these units possibly not the type that are compatible to be slowed down by a rheostat ? I'm not an electrical engineer but have read that there are motors that are made to be run by a rheostats and motors that aren't . Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The rheostat has a tuning pot on the circuit board, unplug the unit, remove the electrical cover and locate a small white or blue plastic screw with an arrow on the side of the rheostat housing, CAUTION THE FOLLOWING STEP REQUIRES WORKING AROUND LIVE ELECTRICAL WIRES DO NOT ATTEMPT IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF PROPER SAFETY PROCEDURES!!! plug the unit back in and turn the screw clock wise slowly with the rheostat in the fully clockwise position. This should result in a reduced speed and proper damper opening (should be just flapping slightly at full burn and further open at idle, normally).

This should solve the issue, let us know how it turns out.

is there a damper built into your power venter? idk what model i have but i do not have a fan speed adjustment, that i know of, but i do have a damper that i just adjust to control my draft.

No damper on mine just a rheostat.

Thanks Matthaus, tomorrow I will give it a try when I will be home all day to keep an eye on it.

The adjustment worked, but still a very fine line of having the fan shut down if you go to far. Still think a fan blade that moves less air with the motor running at a little higher rpm would be safer. Maybe same fan with 1/2 or 1/3 less vanes on it ? Just a thought....

So why not buy a replacement blade and shave a little off the end of it. Just make sure that you remove the same amount from each blade to maintain the balance. Or maybe reshape the blades to draw less ??

Try a little experimenting on the replacement blade. If it doesn't work, you can always go back to the original.
