Bummed Chubby

Not giddy at all. I was a pellet user for 8 yrs. and this is my second for coal and i have learned from last years mistakes. It's nice not to have to worry about adding fuel during night especially with pellet depending on the size you have to keep adjusting feed rate. If pellets are small and on a high fire you can rip through 40# in 12-hours. I can get 2-days on a bag of coal. I do not know what it is about coal but its addictive. Sometimes paying more attention to the stove than my wife but she enjoys the heat. My basement used to be 55-deg. now 68. My house is a cape and basement about 35x25. and my first floor temp is 70-71. I have one small fan blowing from behind on the chub about 5 ft away from it and it seems to be moving the air pretty good. In a little while i will give it another few shakes to get to a half of pot and i will be good till the morn.

If you have a huge interior chimney and it needs extra heat to keep a positive draft they will help. Or if there is a rising temperatures overnight and extra chimney heat is desired and needed. These will also help if you have some really gassy coal by providing additional combustion above the fire. These are not needed in a normally operating stove.

That's pretty cool. Thanks for the pics. I got a little ash bound today, lost some heat and had to shake a little early but will get back on schedule hopefully,

Yeah doesnt make sense to me as it appears to allow air to simply bypass the coal bed from underneath. Anyone else see this as odd ?
FWIW - the Penn Coal stove has two small holes built into the sides - about 1/2" in size. They appear to mimic the Chubby pilot idea.

Adding some air is the whole point. The air is hot, so it helps with the chimney draft as well as helping ignite the gas emitted from the coal. Those little "ignition pilots" work as designed, though most people probably don't need them.

I wish I could change the post to happy chubby now because boy does this stove kick butt! I really wish I could have it on my first floor but do not have a chimney for it. It is now 28 outside and my basement is 70 and first floor 71. I just installed today a corner door fan to move the air out of the stove side and bring to the other plus whatever is rising up the stairway. By learning from my mistakes from last year I have had no problems getting 12 hour burns and some, maintaining 4-500 degree temps and managing some low coal consumption, getting almost 48 hrs on a bag of coal. Really thinking about making a plenum for the stove and connecting it to my furnace, or try to find a blower chubby.

Glad your Chubby is humming along and keeping your warm! I am getting 2 to 3 days of burning as well on a 50lb of coal. The house is in the mid 70's. AND I LOVE IT! 12 + hour burns are EASY. Though sometimes "She Who Must Be Obeyed" says it is too warm for her. Like you, last year was my first year with a Chubby and coal, and learning from my "misteaks" like you have, I am even more hooked on coal than I was last year. You just can't beat the steady even heat with literal hands free heating. Good Bless COAL!

Anyway, I was talking with Larry Trainer this morning as we are trying to get our schedules worked out so I can get my Jr down to him for an overhaul.The hang up is on my end not Larry's. The wife and I can't decide what color to have the Jr painted... Red or Green.. Ideas anyone? I like the idea of a red body with the top, legs and both doors black. Wifee poo is in the "Hnter Green" mode.

You hit it right with the ease of coal, once you figure out your stove and chimney its like having your tstat like Larry says between 4-500 degrees all the time. Both colors would be a great choice i guess go by what your background color is or room decor color. I have seen a red/black chubby and looks pretty good but hunter might green might be nice also. Either way it will still look good its a chubby! There is a blower chubby local to me that i have to check out and if it is no good i will wait to see what larry has.

@Onedollar - why not just paint it yourself ? Larry is not going to do any 'magic' to the stove that a common person cannot do themselves with simple skills, buffing wheel / wire wheel, and paint.

I have enough on my plate without dealing with a stove rehab. I probably could do it. You are right but I personally don't need the headache or inevitable body ache(s) that come with it. My spine isn't as straight as it used to be. Or at least that is what all those MRI's say.

Besides while I am there I get to snoop around the Chubby plant and see what is in the pipeline!

That was the excitement for me also coming into non rookie year of burning coal was to plan a date to fire her up, thats why i had started the post as bummed chubby because of it being warmer than normal. Wanted to start Halloween but we had Sandy and warm temps, then wanted Thanksgiving but oh , warm temps. At least i fired her up on Christmas! Was thinking it was never going to happen.
