That was tried before by "environmentalists" and rejected by the EPA.

Lead shot for most bird hunting was banned in Maine 25-30 years ago, because it was killing the birds who ate it long after hunting season was over. It was banned by the Fish & Wildlife Service, which directly and indirectly promotes hunting, not by environmentalists. Haven't seen any attempts to ban lead in any other ammunition -- apparently deer and bear and bunny rabbits do not favor spent bullets in their diets.

Rberg it's ongoing effort, the situation I alluding to happened in 2010 but it appears they tried again last March.

WASHINGTON— One hundred organizations in 35 states today formally petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate toxic lead in hunting ammunition to protect public health and prevent the widespread poisoning of eagles, California condors and other wildlife. Up to 20 million birds die each year from lead poisoning after consuming spent lead shot and bullet fragments left in the wild from hunting.

“The unnecessary poisoning of eagles, condors and other wildlife is a national tragedy that the EPA can easily put an end to,” said Jeff Miller with the Center for Biological Diversity. “There are safe, available alternatives to lead ammo for all hunting and shooting sports, so there’s no reason for this poisoning to go on. Getting the lead out for wildlife is in line with traditional American conservation, hunting and fishing values.”

Today’s petition follows the EPA’s refusal in 2010 to review a petition asking for a ban on lead bullets, shotgun pellets and fishing tackle under the Toxic Substances Control Act, and seeks federal rules requiring use of nontoxic bullets and shot for hunting and shooting sports. It was filed by groups representing conservationists, birders, hunters, zoologists, scientists, American Indians, wildlife rehabilitators and veterinarians.

Arguments for the ban: save a lot of wildlife. Arguments against the ban: ???? When lead shot was banned in Maine, sportsmen feared damage to shotgun barrels from the harder steel shot. I'm not sure whether that was resolved by new materials.

Some see this as a bona-fide effort to protect wildlife. Some, I'm sure, fear it is a sneaky roundabout attempt to ban ammo in general.

Why is it they would bring the Newtown massacre into it?

Anti-gunners are everywhere. What the hell it has to do with biological diversity I have no clue.

Didn't you know it was illegal to posses a rock?

I demand all driveways be made of sand and all decorative assault rocks be removed from any premises and replaced by biodegradable foam... We should cut our hands and feet off as well , we might feel the sudden urge to assault someone and we can't possibly allow that!

Anyone interested there is a full auto M-16 for sale by NorthEast, Pa. only has one bid of $10K, can't blame the city for making a little profit. I don't know if that's a reasonable price or not, seems high & the guy wants to scare everyone else away. It says in excellent condition, fired very little & never used on patrol. If you have a Class #3 there it is.
