They have been looking for a way to break the locals hold on valuable shorefront property for awhile. Marine park off Cutler, ME. Just for the elite sailors, no pesky lobster traps. Walter Cronkite was all for it and a moratorium on building on the Maine coast. More then one way to skin a cat. Take away the ability to pay the taxes already jacked up by the state and bingo. To bad lobster and crabs don't have big doe eyes.

They are doing this across the nation for sure, lake Winnipesaki (idk how to spell that) has the same issue... the poor grandma whos lived their her whole life in her lil' cabin is being forced out by making her taxes 50k a year or w/e so they can tear down poor nana's lil' cabin only to have a hotel or a 2 mil home erected in nana's lot to bring in huge revenues to the town! Its a sin  but i see it everyday :(

That happened to a few down in Luzerne Co where they did the tax reassessment that Richard mentioned earlier. People living along the lake had many generations owning the home so they were not wealthy. But got clobbered on the taxes. That should not happen. That is one example that property tax should be illegal.

not right taxes are higher for lake front verses in middle of woods, 100 miles from lake. Its land with a house for a permanent YEAR round residence. If its a summer, SEASONAL use house(2cd house) than thier should be a wealth tax on it, for its not primary residence, wether its lake front or middle of woods, 100 miles from lake. As the saying goes if you got it flaunt it, so flaunt the money over just as well to local economy to those that live in communties year round, and get inconvienced by your high bent nose when you are there SEASONALLY. enuf said.

As a former assessor, it is a complex and difficult position to be in. It is used as a weapon to transfer property to more worthy owners however. That is what is upsetting. Once again, property valuations are set by the state, and local assessors have little power to spread the burden anywhere else in towns with few resources. Home and property owners take it in the shorts. Take the resource away that allows you to stay on your prime property and out you go.
