We're getting a new home

We're getting a new home

PostBy: Richard S. On: Sat Jan 19, 2013 4:42 am

My host apparently has been planning this for a few years now. They are calling it "cloud hosting", basically in addition to what resources I have I'll have scalable resources as they are available. To simplify the explanation suppose the server I'm on is running a lot of tasks and I've reached the limit of the resources I'm guaranteed. The next door neighbors server is idling along, those resources they are not using can be utilized by me. :)

They tell me downtime should be 5 minutes and I'm not sure when this will happen.

There is millions of dollars of equipment there. We only occupy a very, very small part of it. I don't own, I rent. ;)

Besides, it's in Atalanta.

LOL.... If our growth keeps up like this it wont be long! I see Webby sailing a fine yacht in Newport Harbor everyday and it sure looks like Pina Colada he's holding (could be a Daiquiri though) ;)

I don't have a dedicated server, it's VPS so I'm already running on a virtual server. This expands that across multiple machines. For example how many times have you heard the story of a site going viral and it goes down? If your the host you really have no choice but pulling the plug on site like that because it's disrupting every one else on that server. That can't or shouldn't happen under this system. I'll even be able to scale stuff up for short periods if I wanted too, for example when Coalcast comes back if I don't have enough bandwidth for it I can scale it up for the short period of time I need it. :)

As it is right now I need a plan that is going to meet my needs during peak traffic, it's not very efficient for either me or the host because most of the time you have hardware sitting around not being utilized.
