"Nut and Slack" method for hand firing bit

After doing some extensive reading of older posts here on the bitty forum, I found something that seems to work great in my DS Machine. I added the Basement #4 door to get secondary air, but it isn't heated secondary air. This being the case, the stove has only limited capability to burn off volatiles.

I was reading a Popular Mechanics article that was referenced in an old post. The "Nut and Slack" method they described seems to work really well, and gives a good use for those fines :idea:

It's a little more work than dumping anthracite down the hopper, but I'll do a little extra work for half the price!!!

This is giving nice, controlled burns and not much smoke.

I aggree the larger the coal the harder it is to control. I burn a mix of coal 5" to chicken egg size. If put too much large coal in it rages and if theres too much small it sits there and smolders.

I use a mix of coal similar to what you're doing but larger coal does fine too (with my particular stoves and chimneys).

Any coal that is slack/stoker sized goes to the stoker. I wish more members of this forum would try bituminous in a stoker, it works very well.

I would love to have a stoker fired boiler.... My house has cast iron baseboard and radiators that are currently not being used, and half of my house (side by side duplex) I rent out and that is on an oil fired boiler... As cheap as bit coal is, I could run that off of a stoker boiler too and just include heat in the rent $$

I was under the impression though that all of the bit stoker manufacturers were no longer producing new units.

This unit will need to be paired with a boiler, the most economical might be a used EFM boiler.
Pease feed and coal deals in bituminous stokers and boilers, http://peasefeedandcoal.com/Easy-Clean-Boiler.html not sure if they are currently in production.

but coal isn't going anywhere.

Electric prices will soar (more then they have) Out here Somerset Pa it would shut down everything. I mean everything theres nothing left. 11 miles of bethlehem steal long gone. Lockheed martin slow, layoffs and it's the red head step child of the Co. No real good highways in or out. Turnpike exits are somerset and bedford no johnstown exit, no good north south route.

They kill coal even Walmart will leave.

Shale gas/fracken ha what joke. We build fracken tanks all but dead.

He or they kill coal look out.

Read the history of this area and others im sure. They fought everyone.

I have no affiliating directly with coal. But coal is this area.
