Honda Odyssey Running Badly.

Honda Odyssey Running Badly.

PostBy: EarthWindandFire On: Fri Jan 25, 2013 7:37 pm

Hey guys:

I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice or suggestions on what might be wrong with my 2002 Honda Odyssey.

The van was running fine today until my wife came to a stop sign, as soon as she started to go, it had a loss of power and ran rough all the way home. It smelled pretty bad when she pulled into the driveway, no signs of smoke or anything, but its too late and we are too depressed to check under the hood right now.

Possibly a blown head gasket, but I have to wait till tomorrow to pull the dipstick and check for coolant in the oil.

This is a perfect example of Murphy's Law, I just bought a beautiful Toyota Land Cruiser two weeks ago. I would really hate to be stuck with 2 car payments at the same time. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated!

Do a search, there are Honda Odyssey forums out there that may be of more help.

Hard to tell what it might be from just that description, hopefully it's not a head gasket, that's no fun to deal with, especially in this weather. On the upside, if you do your own wrenching, you can probably get a used engine for not too much $$ and just swap it in.

MIght just be a plug, wire, coil pack, coil on plug...scan the codes and see. Might be something simple.
Did you wash it recently? maybe got some moisture into the engine bay on the coil/plugs/wires, etc...

Well, I just drove it two miles down the road to my mechanic. On the way, the Traction Control System (TCS) light came on and the Engine light stayed on. For what it's worth, this Honda Odyssey has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

We were actually shopping for a 2007-2010 Toyota Sienna with all-wheel-drive when we came across a great deal on the Toyota Land Cruiser. If it is the transmission, the cost of that would exceed the value of the vehicle.

Thanks!

Just yesterday I had my Silverado die on me as I pulled up to a stop sign. Long story short, the lousy gas we're running apparently also had water in it. :taz: With my tank low and the weather so cold it just died. Hopefully it's something as simple for you.

Well, good news for my wallet!

The hesitation and rough running was caused by a bad cylinder coil. At the same time, he will do a complete tune-up and replace the timing belt and water pump. The van should be good for another few years. I have to keep a minivan for my 5 year old Mastiff. Once they get old, lifting a 200 lb dog into an suv or truck is difficult and stressful on the animal. So, it looks like I'm stuck with a minivan while my wife drives the Land Cruiser!

Similar story with my spousal units '09 Acadia. One of the rare times I was driving it the other week I said does it always miss and hesitate like this? "just when I drive it up hills." Oh, how long has it been doing this? "about a month, maybe longer I don't remember, but I kept forgetting to tell you and it seems like it is doing it now when I pull away from stop lights too"

I immediately thought transmission wave plate since that is a known headache with them. Good thing it is still under warranty...took it in and it turned out 4 of the 6 coils were bad. So they replaced 4 of the 6 coils and 4 of the 6 plugs under warranty (not sure why they didn't spring for the other two plugs or call us and ask if we would like to buy the extra two just so all are replaced at the same time at the present 68k miles). Better than a transmission, even better it was under warranty. I just hope the wave plate also goes kerput before the warranty runs out. This thing has not been very good, I try to buy american cars, but I am running out of options.

The van runs good again, the mechanic charged me a fair price like he has for the past ten years.

I use re-loadable debit cards for such things, every week a certain amount is automatically loaded onto the card. This way, I never have to charge a repair and I can buy tires for example when Michelin has a sale.
