Power Vent Longevity

Thought this would be an interesting topic. Of course the cost comparison of power vent vs. a chimney is largely going to depend on how long the power vent lasts and the maintenance costs such as replacement parts. Of course the one variable is going to be maintenance performed by the consumer and I'm not sure how I can account for that in this poll.

There is two options, the first set is for those that have had a power vent fail, to define failure would mean it went in the trash. The other is for those that have a power vent and it hasn't failed yet.

If you fixed it to keep it running choose the second option, of course costs to maintain it are open for discussion.

Just a note but specifically for coal applications where the power venter is running 24/7

I had a power venter for my oil boiler. I think I'd come under option three..... 7 or 8 yrs and replaced it with a chimney because we were sick & tired of noise, maintenance & general grief. But.... at the time we installed it we couldn't afford a chimney. That 7 or 8 years got us to a place where we could afford a chimney.

21 years on oil burner, but a lot of annoyance when draft prover switch gets eccentric. Hate it but it is now just for hot water.

If you're on oil burner it's not running 24/7 though. Guess I should of been specific. This poll is really for those using for coal application.

Regarding power venters and stokers the only place draft really counts is over the fire, meaning the same portion of the boiler or furnace containing the fire pot or carpet. To have the draft prover switch sensor at the breech would not safeguard against clogged flue passages.
