I just received an advertisement for one called “Hobby Farms”. I don’t know if that’s what you’re looking for. It looks interesting; I’m on the fence as to whether I want to subscribe.

Backwoods Home Mag. Put out by a proud Libertarian and you can tell when you read it. The issues are online too. Lots of how to do or make things

I currently recieve

Farm and Ranch Living Which is not so much geared to helping you farm as it is telling stories about farming and farming families. I find it interesting to see how others do the same things maybe better ways at times than I do etc.

Countryside All black and white with no fluff but very interesting with alot of ideas. Geared to much smaller scale farming or even "city" farmers with backyard gardens and such but still interesting.

Red Power Which is a magazing dedicated to IH collectors. Not really farming but lots about early tractors and equipment made by IH.

Used to get hobby farms but that magazine has gotten so commercial with tons of ad's and very little usable content. they talk about everything and tell you nothing. Just my take on it though. Sorry if that offends anyone!

Never tried mother earth news yet. Lancaster farming is a good one although I usually just pick one up as needed.

Good luck! Go to a tractor supply and you will find all these magazines. you can pick up a copy of about all them and see how you like them.

I like progressive Farmer, mostly because it has been out for over 100 years, but it is for most mid-west farmers and not really for the Northeast smaller producers.

I have read Hobby Farms on occasion, and this is my issue with that magazine, BUT it really is my only gripe. THEY ONLY TELL YOU THE GOOD. What I mean is, everything they write about is all the happy, glossy, you-do-this-and-you-can't-go-wrong type of writing. It does not matter if it is about raising Imu's or putting in a root-cellar, they fail to mention the con-side of the list.

Sometimes in farming, there are very important reasons NOT to do something, and I think they often get people the "let's have a picnic in the back 40, with the children frolicking around barefoot, as we have a leisurely picnic with the sheep baaing in the background", when farming is nothing like that in reality.

I get New Holland News. Free from the dealer, since I bought my Boomer. Of course every article features a New Holland tracter, but I find the articles interesting and good reading.

I currently read Countryside, Mother Earth News, Hobbie Farm, Grit, and Backwoods Home.

My very personal opinions are as follows:

Backwoods Home is my favorite, partly because I agree with the Libertarian politics. They cover homesteading, gardening, building & construction, survival, & guns.
Countryside is my second favorite. Less political, more about livestock and frugal living.
Grit would be next. Nicely written. Good information.
Mother earth news is the liberal hippy global warming scare tactic version of backwoods home. Nice articles, excellent website, if you can get past their socialist politics.
Hobby Farm is glossy, high end, pretty pictures, nice stories, and everything is expensive.
Then there are the magazines my wife likes. Those geared toward cooking and pictures of puppies and grand kids. Country and Country Woman would fit this mold.

Again, at the risk of insulting anyone, these are only my opinions.
