Guess it's time to post my baby again--titled--78 1/2 FXWG--built it from boxes, bought it in Norwalk, Ct for $800.00 & all was there--swapped out to solids, Andrews J cam & S&S carb

Funny this thread was back - after the weather today I thought about riding every minute. I'm JONESING for spring!!

My latest brainstorm on the motorcycle front is finding a CR500 engine to throw in my '84 XL350R. That should make that bike REAL fun! :mrgreen:

LOL when you get the CR motor in some video would be nice. I'd love to see something like that with tags on it!!!!!

I WAS out last Sunday altho I had to dodge a few ice patches

. It was only up and down the road a few times. I fire it up and run it every so often until spring since I don't winterize it. Gets Me Through!!!!!

I don't winterize mine either ... but I'm an MMI grad, so if they break it doesn't cost me much.

I don't like getting any salt on my bikes - ever since I was 16, I always waited until snow was long gone, and all the salt had been washed off the road. Rust & I are mortal enemies ...

My videos suck quality wise, but that'll be the first thing I do if I ever get this project off the ground. Looks like it will be cheaper to buy the whole bike than just the engine ... :roll:

Yeah the old 2smokes like that usually don't come cheap. I've seen some beautious restores around here, the 250R trykes and quads along w/ the banshees. Some are absolutely mint. My offroad machines get clean if I go in snow, or my once a year ride when it's 90 degrees and raining hard (followed by mud) or maybe a light powerwash if it needs fixin LOL

I suppose you'll be using some lock-tite with that big 'ol 500 engine

Someone told me awhile back they were constantly losing parts off their 500KX since it shook so much. One year my bud had a Cageiva 500 and we rode together. They took over Husquarvana for awhile (?) He asked if I wanted to ride it and I honestly didn't want to. Now I wish I had, just to experience it. He didn't keep it very long.

Looks like a V-Rod. SWEET! I used to love drag racing. Still do actually .... but I can only afford to do it on the street these days.

The old air cooled ones used to shake like a paint mixer. :lol:

Hondas were REAL smooth considering that coffee-can sized piston whipping up n down in there. KX's always shook - even their 250's would rattle your teeth compared to a Honda.

Never thought it would be so hard to find a 500! I hate to settle for a 250 engine ... naaaaaaaw, that ain't gonna happen! Must have BIG power! Loctite is ready!!

Got sidetracked earlier looking for CR500's to buy. Stumbled across some cool *censored*! Now picture how SICK this setup would be!!! 210 2-stroke horsepower!! LOVE IT!! http://www.trickracing1.com/Twin_CR500.html

These guys down under (New Zealand) built this FI CR500 & tossed it in a CRF frame. Not crazy about FI, but I love this video for the SOUND.

That's an interesting pail LDP. I was thinking about a KLR650 which is almost the same bike as your's for an adventurer type travel rig. How do like yours in that role?

Check out these two home builts. Very cool designs. One is powered with the 22hp Briggs and the other a more conventional sport plane engine. You'll be able to hear the briggs

. The construction process is pretty cool. Looks like that pink insulation foam inside between the wood. Love to build one of these to tool around the coast! They get some serious speed for that little HP.

pic 2 my family Our son (on the left) who just turned 31 few days ago, is riding a wheeler these days when were off road. He also has a couple of street bikes. I'm looking to buy a pair of on off road bikes for the wife and I so we can get into riding more often again. 8-)

I have an '07 Yamaha 700 Grizzly 4X4 for offroad. It has a winch and a plow.

I'm having a tough time coming to terms with this, but it should probably be sold. I hardly ever ride it. I can go for at least 50 miles in several directions right out of my door, but I'm not into it like I used to be.

Thinking about getting cash towards a smaller dual purpose bike that would be more of a prepper/economical type item. Or using it towards a smaller car. My son starts driving this year.

Probly one of those issues I'm gonna have to sit on a few months before I pull the trigger, but it may be going on Craigslist one day soon.

The DR650 is nice, in that it can do just about a little bit of any type of riding. The compliant suspension, and the seating position are great for longer trips. After riding sport bikes and cruisers, I've found I'd rather ride a dual sport motorcycle with street tires thru the twisties than anything else! I love how it handles. It doesn't have the crazy power that most of today's bikes have, and it shows when it's loaded down with gear, riding uphill into a headwind (i.e. I-80 west thru central PA) The power is more than ample in most situations though, and the low end torque makes it a blast to ride on back roads.

My biggest gripe with the bike is the lack of wind protection. It can get pretty annoying/tiresome to deal with. Cross winds that aren't even perceptible on the 'busa, will be blowing you around on these dual sports. The new body style KLR may be better with the wind, but I can't say for sure. If you don't ride on the interstate much though, I think you'd be happy with this style of bike.

Yep - I had the DRZ400S. Wind on the highway would beat the crap out of you. With the D606 knobbies I had on there, it would get real squirelly the faster you went. Wasn't too too bad at 75 .. but over 90 you'd have to position your weight forward to avoid a slow wobble. Definitely not something I'd want to take on a 300 mile excursion, but man what a blast on the back roads! When taking a left or a right turn onto a street, I never even touched the brakes nor did I have to roll off the throttle. 8-)

Lots of fun that bike was. The engine responded VERY well to minor modifications too.
