Yeah ... please don't ...

2ndtimer - definitely keep that circulator you've got there - they don't make anything that good anymore. That thing will outlast the house as long as you remember to put a few drops of oil under the little flaps there. 8-)

I have been looking at the videos of refurb'd EFMs... wow. Quite a nice piece of machinery.

I still am thinking though about a standalone stove, in my first floor, as an alternative option. Reasons: a) it would allow me the visual of enjoying the fire during the cold winter months (aesthetics), and b) this option would leave the oil burner intact as a backup.

Can a direct-vent coal stove be vented out a window opening? I have a room in my living area (which is two rooms adjoining) with a double-window. I am wondering if a direct-vent stove could be exhausted out that way. Let's say I remove the upper pane and build a heavy metal replacement, in which the thru-the-wall fitting would be mounted.

Avoiding having to cut through the double-brick walls of the house (with the resulting permanent hole, in case I ever sell the house) is something I would really like.

I think the direct vent's are supposed to be 'x' amount away from a window or door to be code compliant (can't remember the 'x' amount). Putting it in one side of a double window would not be far enough away. Don't know how worried you are about being code compliant.

You would also need to thermally isolate the replacement metal pane you are making so it wouldn't sweat and drip condensation into the window assembly below it. I suppose if you used a normal wall pass through thimble it would have all the clearance issues resolved.
