15% ethanol new reg.

Every single motor I've worked on in the last 10 years -- from chainsaws, to weedwhackers, leafblowers, cars/trucks, motorcycles, outboards & tractors --has suffered from a lean condition. Every single one. When I bought my Echo 2-stroke weedwhacker, it was apparent from the first 10 pulls of the recoil starter that this thing was not set up optimally. Same with the Husqvarna chain saw I bought ... and the Echo leaf blower -- all were ridiculously lean. Just finished a snowblower today that required a turn or 2 out of the main.

When I used to work in the city, I would come across at least 10 pieces of lawn equipment PER WEEK, that residents just threw in the trash. Most were less than 3 years old. Every single one (except one with a flywheel bolt that was improperly torqued & sheared the keyway) ran great & started with one pull once I worked my magic with the carb.

My '74 RD350 came from the factory with #25 pilots, & 120 mains at sea level. It now has a 37.5 pilot & 210 mains along with a much richer emulsion tube. Before I changed the emulsion tube (needle jet) & needle from stock, I needed to run a 280 main .... which was STILL too lean!

You'd think someone would have brought forward an investigation on ethanol content around MA & other places that require it's use. The silence is deafening .... and with our liberal state government, par for the course.

Amen brother. Besides the ethanol is hard on outboard engines and other 2 strokes and it goes bad when you try and store it.

"Water in E-10 fuel is another problem that boaters must deal with. The introduction of water on E-10 fuel can be disasterous. E-10 can hold up to four teaspoons of water in suspension per gallon. Once this saturation point is exceeded, the solution separates and the gas floats on top while the ethanol and water mix on the bottom. This event is called "phase separation". Ethanol fuel can absorb enough water to reach it's phase separation point in just over 3 months at 70% humidity."

Here is another link to a more in depth explanation and sales pitch for a product to "solve" the problem. The real solution would be to get the dam alcohol out of the gasoline.

I just dumped out a fuel tank today in a lawn tractor that had about a gallon of fuel in it -- 50% of which was water! I tossed it in my burn can, which got rid of the fuel. There was still quite a bit of water in there after that. Bad bad bad!! What the hell is our government doing to us??? We are going straight backwards. Our equipment costs more, breaks more & runs like *censored* all in the name of the environment. Last I checked, I still had asthma after all these "green" regs were put in place.

I can't imagine how sluggish our cars will be at 15% ... or I should say 25% - 30% in MA. I sometimes think they're deliberately trying to piss us off!

Well I guess I better knock on wood.... I've been lucky. My '71 Buick Skylark runs great on 87 octane E-10, and it has a 1970 10:1 455 in it. Still gets 11 MPG in town, and I can flirt with 18 MPG on a trip, usually in the 17.6 - 17.8 range. That's with a 2.56 rear and 29" tires.

Now my DR650, that's another story.... The carbs are all fouled up.

It's all in the jetting. If you set the carb up to run on this *censored* fuel, then it will run. But take a ride down south & fill up ... and suddenly it's pig-rich, shooting black smoke out the tailpipe & getting shitty mileage.

If you tried to run 1970's fuel with the setup your running, I'd bet you it wouldn't even start. If it did, you'd gas-foul the plugs soon after.

For example, my '74 RD350 2-stroke came factory with #130 main jets & 25 pilots. It now requires #300's with the stock needle jet (emulsion tube) & 37.5 pilots - that goes to show you how shitty MA fuel is compared to back then. Even after upgrading to a MUCH richer needle jet, I still have to run #200 mains. The size difference between a 130 & a 300 is ASTOUNDING. Almost triple the size.
