520 stoker motor tripping out

Uh oh

Stoker motor is tripping out.
I reset it a few times and also tried spinning fan, just keeps tripping.

Marathon 1/8hp 1725 rpm

I am gonna search the threads and see if I can find anything

Please if anyone can help asap, as we need heat.

Auger manually spins freely.

Assuming there isn't something seriously wrong with the stoker and making the motor work extra hard, the motor is probably defective.

Well that sucks, 5 months and shot.

Yeah, I can spin the auger no problem.

I think I will take off motor and see if it runs with no load.

It might run with no load just fine, but that won't help you. See if EFM will warranty that one.

Ok, well something just got me,

I tried spinning the fan blade counter clockwise and it only went so far.
I then spun it clockwise and it went easy.
I then hit the reset button and I could see the motor spun about the same distance I spun backwards, then stopped and tripped.

So I just spun it backwards for a minute or two, then hit the reset

WORKING now?

I flipped the auger gear, so I can get more flames inside the pot....plus no extra load for now.


Not sure on this one, as there was no buildup in the auger, the fan seems to be fine and been running about 5 min now??

Keep a spare motor on hand, they arent that expensive. Especially on the coldest night of the year, which we aLL know is when itll go bad for good!

It has warned you. Motor's trip for a reason usually due to loading but in this case the load is normal. This indicates the motor has internal problems and your borrowed time is about to expire. I recommend you make arrangements for a replacement motor now.

Did you install the cover plate supplied with the motor, behind the fan?

I will be ordering a motor asap

Everything seems to be fine. No binding or noise on startup and every startup has been successful since.

I did not do the install, so I am not sure on this.
If this is in the install manual, I will check to see if it is there.

Does this motor normally run hot the touch?
I noticed this the first day or week, but never thought about it again.
It has been running for 5 months, so I take it as warm/hot being normal.

It's supposed to be a TEC, totally enclosed motor, so it might run warm if you have a heavy load on it. If the dust cover wasn't installed, then the motor is filling with coal ash particles and its lifespan is reduced.

I had the same problem with mine 5 months after starting it.

It turned out the ratchet arm assembly joints just needed a few drops of oil. I assumed that it was oiled at the factory, apparently they don't.

The manual calls for oiling these points.

Oil it now every 6 months, been running for years now same motor no problems.

That sentence in the manual should be rewritten. It was determined after the printing that dust sticks to the oil and causes the feed pawl to become gummy and not drop fast enough. The better advice is to keep it totally free from oil, but both ways is OK.

I think he meant each end of the connecting rod, not the drive pawl.

I oil the stoker linkage periodically with a sticky 140w gear lube, the drive and check pawl gets a shot of Kroil or some other light oil/solvent mix.
