Jungle Jim is one thing .........now if the Union Park Pontiac ever came out of hiding and was up on the block I would be cracking open piggy and digging in the couch for loose change to get that one. Those early days of drag racing were really somethin' Mike

Back in the day.......when we 'CCed um up, and 'run what you brung', as they say. Sometimes drove it there with the slicks in the trunk, put em on, went home with a trophy.........if it was a good day................
Today is still fun to watch, but the competition MIGHT outspend you by waaaaaaaay more than the price of a six-pack!

Way back when, I met Austin Coil at Hopkinton Fair, in Contoocook, NH and he was running a alcohol funny car with 'pullin tires' on it, yanking the sled in the modified category....NE Dragway was a great place to see all the big boys....AND they have a National Event in June!!!!!!! I lived long enough to see that happen!!!!! Yup, Jungle Jim was there 3 times that I was.....things were a little different back then......and that might have been a good thing.

How about TV Tommy Ivo with the dual engine Chevy rail in Sanford Maine at the old Air Forge Runway...back when you could stand ANYWHERE you wanted along the surface, just stay out of the way of the cars.......
Like Maple Grove and flying into the corn field at the run-out area when the chutes didn't deploy.....back before a wife, kids......and reality. Politically Correct wasn't even a phrase.......profiling....damned right!!!

That sure dates me, but look where Coil has come from.......... Chi-town Hustler.......and level he achieved.............if anyone REALLY knows why he left his magic chair at JFR, please PM me, I'd LOVE to know the rest of the story.......

Seeing the cars with a 'mock-up' motor is a little bit of a let-down, but why waste 'good parts' sittin' in a show room...or your 'man cave'. Personally, I think a Man Cave is a totally different kind of place, but Fred and I are on the same page on that opinion, probably many of you, too. We are looking forward to some fine weather for the racing season..... :D :D :D :!:

Limblad built that chassis! Wow that guy's been around a while. He built a buddy of mine's '40 Chevy - thing had over 1,000 HP at the wheels! What a machine ... but that's what you get when you spend $150k ... Sold it for less than 1/3 of that ...

Man how times have changed. Now just as many rules on the track as there are on the street! One run under 11:49 seconds, and your banned - until you install a roll cage. Christ ... this ain't 1974 .... lots of cars will do that today will little modification!

Fred, Sure as soot, I remember Hatfield Dragway 1/4 mile of track and a completely unsanctioned shutdown zone.Oh,don't forget the aroma from Hatfield Packing Co.to go with the hotdogs and fries. Two sharp memories of Hatfield are #1 On a warm Sunday there was this beautiful metalic lavender 1934 Dodge coupe powered by a Chrysler Hemi [pre 426 street hemi] with a big lumpy cam and wide slicks that absolotely dominated all comers.I can almost hear the cammed exhaust and see those wide valve covers shining in the sun yet [no hood on the coupe].What a thrill to see it leave straight and right, plus all the Fords and Chevys didn't have a chance that day. #2 Was a friday night when a black Henry J also powered by the Chrysler Hemi came hard out of the chute, hit second gear wobbled badly under full power and flipped right on his roof and rotated like a pinwheel for a bunch of turns. You never saw a bunch of teenagers scramble so fast in your life!!The official hatfield combination track cleanup/ambulance/family station wagon had to cart him away after they got him out of that little Kaiser. Those are the very best days of Drags in my book. People made their own stuff, thought their own thoughts, and learned from their own mistakes. Mike
