Nice post Steve. I also like your signature line about buying your supply early.

I am not a fussy eater, and I don't get cranked up over ashes either. One of the most important characteristics for me is the sizing of the coal. I don't want it full of fines, and I don't want oversize coal or junk that will shear a pin in my auger.

OMG! Someone finally got it. We don't really care about ash content we are just afraid of work. Thank you!! Here all this time I thought I was looking for one of the most efficient, cleanest burning sources of local fuel but in reality I am just lazy. Now I see everything in life differently.

Hey Glenn I will admit I am lazy because I ran to Superior last week (-closer to me than Mallard-) for a ton that I am pulling off a trailer in 5 gallon buckets to load my hopper. The Superior is producing A LOT of ash too with less BTU'S but I am glad I got it verses oil, electric, or gas.I see value even in less than desirable coal and am glad for the savings compared to other fuels.

Coal is a pain in my arsh because I am lazy but the money saved is the motivator and I am glad to get any that does the job.

I don't want you pissed off at me so I apologies for sounding offensive and hope you accept. My intentions were to remind others what the high cost options are in comparison and why the work involved with higher ash does not necessarily mean there is no substantial value.

Now as Rob stated if there is excessive fines or rocks or anything else that would cause a breakage of equipment or put the unit down for repair then that is unexceptable. That being said,I got my coal from Mallard in July and it is clean rice coal with no fines or cross contamination of another size. The quality sounds like it took a dive since I got mine and I don't blame anyone for looking elsewhere.

I have had some coal that barely burned, at that point it is a waste of money and time.

I tend to think keeping a fire is for those that gravitate towards work. Then the smart ones away from Mallard. The heat creation can be seen as a hobby in my house and nasty coal takes the fun out of it. If I did.nt live in the middle of the ACR I would probably be satisfied with anything that burns too.
