Penn Keystone Coal

PostBy: WindGapCoal On: Sun Apr 13, 2014 10:03 am

Has anyone ever burned Penn Keystone anthracite? I have a Keystoker KA6 boiler and was thinking about purchasing a 22.5 ton shipment of bagged rice coal from Penn. They deliver it on a flatbed truck with eighteen 1-1/4 ton pallets. Would cost about $225/ton delivered which is about 50 dollars cheaper than the loose coal delivery I just received back in December. The pallets are heavy duty shrink wrapped so I can store them outside. I also have an 80 acre farm and plenty of area to store the pallets. I like the idea of the 50lb bags for convenience. I burn through about 6 tons per year so this should last me about 4 years. On the other hand, I don't want to spend $5,000 and be stuck with a bad load if I can help it so any suggestions from this forum would be greatly appreciated.

Ask them if it is sourced from Kimmels.

...and make damned sure it is not in bags that degrade over time. Cleaning up a few hundred bags that are in tatters will piss off even the 'Good Humor Man'.

They said that I could have it sourced from Kimmel or use their own. What is the difference in quality? Thanks for your response.

I heard good things about Lehigh. On the other hand, I burned Jeddo coal last year and had way too much fly ash. I went back to burning Blaschak but paying an arm and a leg in this area ($280/ton bulk delivery). Penn is selling bagged rice for $225/ton but I have to buy 22-1/2 tons and hire a fork loader to unload 18 pallets. What is Lehigh charging for bagged and bulk rice in the Wind Gap/ Saylorsburg area?

I have purchased 4 loads from Penn Keystone; three loads were excellent and one was acceptable. All were picked up at the Kimmels plant, and I have no problem recommending them to anyone.
