Thanks for sharing. They were very genial considering the lack of tool at that time: no computer, no laser...but the were making marvelous stoves and furnaces....

The rules for piping those octopus furnaces can be useful if you are trying to move warm air around your house without the use of electric. Thank you for sharing

I got a kick out of the drawing showing part of the coal pile in the basement and reading the descriptive properties like "the washed air"...to this day advertising remains the same making statements like "save 30 to 40%" with the new etc. They all saved that amount just like 25% more on labels today

I often wondered if you save 30 to 40% more 3 times everything should be free!

Thanks LS.

My folks house, and my grandparents house in Brooklyn both still had coal steam boilers, as did many others back in the early 1950's.

My first house had an American Standard coal boiler from the early 1920's - with a domestic hot water coil. It had been converted to oil. Was just as efficient as the newer oil boilers. The only down side was having to run it in summer to have hot water. Made the basement and kitchen floor hot !

House hunting a few years ago in the Saratoga Springs area, we came across a house that still had the old octopus coal convection furnace in the basement. It had been converted to oil-fired, but otherwise was original. Wish I'd had a camera with me.

Paul
