Hello all, I need some help. what is the proper way to clean a coal stove to prepare it for the winter. I did see a little surface rust where the pipe comes into the stove. maybe the size of a nickel. how do I remove this and is there any special cleaners I need to get.i did clean out the fire box of all the ash. do I need to remove the pipe from the coal stove and cap it while the stove is not buring for the summer months.

Thanks

use the light abrasive process of your choice to get it down to bare metal and recover it with either polish or HT paint.

i close up the flue at both ends and close up the stove during the off season.

Yes, remove and clean the pipe and cap off the thimble. The pipe will disappear in a few years if left in place.

I run a chimney brush through the stovepipe, some people use a solution of baking soda to nuetralize any acids. You should be able to find the brush and cap anywhere that sells stovepipe. I shy away from box stores for venting supplies as they can be cheesey. I prefer the commercial quality products sold at the local HVAC supply house.

Anything from easy-off oven cleaner to a damp rag w/ fly ash on it--experiment.
