Hi,
I've been lurking for some time now and was itching to get a stove, Great site!
I plan on starting the tear down soon and will post updates as I go.
I recently picked up this Herald Oak #14 and was hoping for some information and thoughts on;
What's missing? Is that the coal grate? It's pretty solid.
Can the crack on the bottom skirt be welded (by an experienced cast welder)?
How does the inside look? It seems pretty tight and the walls seem thick and solid.
How does the fire pot look? More photos?
How much should I nickel plate or chrome? It seems that so much of this could be plated and look amazing, like the door, around the door, the base, skirts, base of finial. I could afford to do a few at a time.
I bought it from a guy who's father in law burned wood in it and that's all. Nobody remembers burning coal, ever . . . not sure if that matters.
Thanks for any input and advice.
Paul

Free advice and worth every penny. I have several #14 Heralds and they are good stoves. You will need a liner in the fire pot before you light it or you will crack it. I can tell you what to get and how to use it. Recast the grate now and use the recast one. Tomahawk foundry in Rice Lake , Wis. would be a good place to go. The original is your pattern and you will need after a few years. You will also need a manual damper in the exhaust pipe. Don't let anyone say other wise.

The middle ring can be welded but MUST be done with 99% nickel rod so it expands like the original. Brandon at the Stove Hospital is a wizz at it. Take the whole stove apart to the last nut and bolt. Sand blast inside and out and clean all the joints. If it does go back together easily, it is not the stove's fault. Recheck our work and see what you did wrong.

It needs to be preheated to around 800° prior to welding and cooled very slowly.stovehospital wrote:The middle ring can be welded but MUST be done with 99% nickel rod so it expands like the original. Brandon at the Stove Hospital is a wizz at it.
