I would like to put a coal fired hot air furnace in place of my oil fired hot air furnace.
I think I am gong to need to re-locate the crock on he chimney a bit. I think I will still need to use double wall pipe to keep my clearances right with the coal appliance.
What I am wondering - are the clearances in the attached pic OK for a oil burner? To me, it looks like a fire waiting to happen. This work was done by the home's previous owner.

NFPA says 18" from combustibles.
It's insulated ductwork. Not sure what its made of, I will find out soon.Lightning wrote:I'd say it's a bit too close for comfort.. Is that just tin work above above the pipe? Or is there a combustible material there?

You can get zero clearance pipe. That looks like it is just fiberglass duct board.
I know its not to 'code' but I would be comfortable putting a 'sleeve' around the flue pipe. If that is a 6" pipe in the pic I would get 8" pipe and use 1" screws to space it away from the 6". The gap will sufficiently drop the temp. I did this in my workshop because the thimble for the flue pipe was a little too close to the drywall ceiling. I forget the temp of the sleeve, but with the stoker running full out I can comfortably lay my hand on it forever without being too hot. The distribution duct work off the stove out there is much hotter than the sleeve over the flue pipe.
I would also replace the plastic strapping with metal around the duct work and I would get the yellow electrical wires up higher if possible.

that duct is just Styrofoam & foil face---I wouldn't worry about it, it's not going to get that hot up there-- how far from that elbow down to the stove?--of course I'm from Freetown
