I live at the northern end of Susquehanna county and have burned Hudson coal the past few years because it can be tough to get a delivery up here for a reasonable cost. I have tried other coal in smaller amounts (ton at a time) and have always like the consistency with Hudson (size, few fines, burn rate) but have tried the others due to high ash.
Well, with the change in ownership and supposed increase in quality also I thought I'd try them again this season. My normal delivery guy (Knorr) was on vacation so I called Susquehanna directly. I was surprised they now schedule and deliver themselves and was able to get 7 tons up to me quickly.
My main reason for post was that they messed up and missed my delivery when it was scheduled. I was frustrated obviously as I had rearranged my work schedule to be home and that ended up being wasted time.
They way they handled this was great though. Rescheduled for 2 days later (due to my schedule) and even knocked $10 off per ton for the mistake. I am pleased for the customer service overall and wanted to share that as that isn't always how it goes. I will post again when I see how this stuff burns.

Delivered to zip 18847 I was quoted $220/ton before the scheduling mistake. I was quoted $235 from Chervy and Butch (from this website...not as cheap as made out to be). Agel quoted me $250! Joe Knorr is $210-220 depending on where diesel fuel is when he comes up.

Coal looks good...consistent size, very few fines...been burning for a week now and am pleased. Just keeping domestic HW and not pulling for heat right now but burning with less ash than the Lehigh I had over the summer. So far so good.

I purchased 3 1/2 tons of nut and just started burning it today. It seems to be burning well, but I'd like to wait a full week
before a full review. The coal itself looks clean, shiny, and hardly any fines. I won't be shaking down until tomorrow so no
report on the ashes.

I picked up 4.34 tons of pea at the mine/breaker on Saturday 11/7 with my dump trailer. The coal looks nice, clean, no fines, etc. Did they jack up the price in November? Charged me $185/ton.

That Hudson stove looks really nice. Are they still in production?Vangellis wrote:I purchased 3 1/2 tons of nut and just started burning it today. It seems to be burning well, but I'd like to wait a full week

I have been burning hudson for 3 yrs and have never had any issues. But this is my only experience with this unit , so I have nothing to compare it to. Too, I am running an EFM stoker boiler and I imagine its not as fussy as some other burning contraptions . (appoligies on the backhanded plug for my unit) Bottom line from the reading Ive done is: you could do a lot worse...

The model is the Hudson from Olix Air Flo. They were a family owned company out of Hornell, NY, in the lower Fingerlakes region. I bought it around the mid 1980's. They got out of the stove business around 1990 due to the cost of the EPA testing requirements. It really is built like a tank.

Nice unit there Kevin
I really like your photo back a few posts w/ the load door open.
That photo could be the Poster Child on how to fill a coal stove properly.

Thanks. After 30 years of trial and error, I think I may have it down to a science now.McGiever wrote:Nice unit there Kevin

By the way McGiever, I always admired how you could change a paper clip into a multi tool.
Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I have been burning there coal for 4 days now,the coal burns very good in my stove quick reloads nice blue flames but the ash is a lot more and the size is on the bigger side of nut from the Coal Contractors Mammoth I was burning. I would get it again without even thinking about it . I picked up 3300# during the Meet and greet at $170.00 a for cry from the $245.00 a ton I would have paid I just wish I would have brought back another ton.

Agree with you on the ash and the sizing but I'm also happy with the coal. The ash seems to have a whiter and lighter look to it though from the Casey I burned last year. The sizing works for me.Keepaeyeonit wrote:I have been burning there coal for 4 days now,the coal burns very good in my stove quick reloads nice blue flames but the ash is a lot more and the size is on the bigger side of nut from the Coal Contractors Mammoth I was burning.
This week should be an even better measure of how good this coal is.
