Kimmel's Rice Vs. Blacshak Rice Coal

Hi Everyone,

I am new to heating with coal and wanted to know what are the pro's and con's regarding various brands of Rice Coal, specifically Kimmels and Blacshak.

Tractor Supply has Kimmel's rice coal for $4.99/bag or $250/ton. My local dealer has Blacshak Rice bagged for $270/ton.

How well does Kimmels and Blacshak burn and what would you guys recommend over the other Kimmel's or Blacshak.

Which one is more convenient for you to get?
Does that include a delivery?

Based on what I've read, the Blacshak may be a little better than the Kimmels..

Prices do not include delivery. I have a trailer I can pick coal up with

Ive burned kimmels bagged and blaschak in bulk. The kimmels didnt put out like the blaschak did. This was 2 years ago tho

No one can ever agree on this. I suggest getting a few bags of each and deciding for yourself.

I agree with Rob R. WRT getting a few bags of each. Just try to use each brand in the same stove/chimney within a very short time frame, so environmental conditions for each are as close to the same as possible.

Using one brand in October and the other in February is not apples to apples.

Being a solid fuel,unlike fuel oil or gas,coal is difficult to mix.We try to mix the raw feed so the finished product is more consistent.Some times ,we don't have the same feed,not necessarily inferior,just different.You will notice a variation from time to time with the same producer for this reason.Many times your burning conditions have as much to do with your success as does your supplier.Usually you just need to make adjustments to your burning technique,and can have greater success.Do not over-correct.

Just had my Blaschak delivered yesterday. Came right from Mahanoy City. Driver told me most places have been mixing and it's rare to get a coal order that comes from the same vein.

This is true, Kimmels sub-contract to other major coal company's.
Last year I burned Blaschak & Reading in the coldest months, they burned the same
and gave the same ash
