Has anyone rebuilt a EFM transmission / gearbox? I have heard they can be rebuilt but never of anyone actually doing it. Anyone with this experience?

Speaking about the older style with straight connecting rod.

Nope, mine is all good. Assisted a friend with one on a 700. It's at the end of adjustment and getting noisy. I was just trying to learn something.

You guys are fast on responses, thank you. :)

When you say "gearbox" are you talking about the reducing unit? In EFM parts diagrams, the "gearbox" is the assembly that converts the rotation of the pot auger to the rotation of the pot and the cleanout rotor. I have heard of successful rebuilds of those.

If you are talking about the reducing unit, I haven't heard of rebuilds. On its older stokers, EFM advised against anyone - even dealers - trying to repair or rebuild them. As a practical matter I think that reducing unit has also been used on S-20's, and good used ones can be found.

Worm gear sets are very picky about proper setup. Get it wrong and they will grind themselves to dust. That would be my guess as to why EFM did not recommend messing with them.
