I was wondering what the heat difference is between the warm morning 400A and a Harman mk2. I couldn't find any numbers off the top for the warm morning, and if I remember correctly the mark 2's are about 70,000 btu. Thanks

400A holds 100 lbs. of coal, but more importantly uses a 12-1/2" grate.

Some smart fellows here can figure out your btu/hr w/ this info. ;)

I can't help with figuring out the BTU's on the WM 400 using McGiever's helpful figures. I looked over some old WM advertising and manuals and couldn't find any data on BTU ratings.

I did use a WM model 500 for a couple of years. Very similar stove to the model 400 and used the same grate. Different grate slide for whatever reason. No bi-metal control on the intake air. The 500 was a 80 lb. stove vs. 100 lb. for the 400. I would very surprised if the WM 400 could not put out a minimum of an actual 80,000 BTU and I wouldn't be shocked if it was more like 100,000 at full, safe blast. That model 500 WM could shame my DS 1400 in heat output. The DS 1400, IIRC, is rated at 80,000 btu. I would guestimate the true max output at more like 60k btu's, tops.

I'd bet that the WM 400a would beat that Harman in max output, if that's important to you. You could also burn Bit if you wanted to go that direction. Actually designed for Bit burning. You can also use it as a barely suitable wood stove in a pinch. They have an over-fire intake you can open partially or keep closed.

Those WM's are hungry for the anthracite though at higher running temps and the Harman would likely go through less coal if it meets your needs.
Good luck. hank2
