A few days ago I installed an IP camera for monitoring the furnace while I'm not home.
Some of you may remember I used an old cell phone before to do this. The cell phone worked good when it worked but wasn't real reliable. When it didn't work it was one of three issues. It would decide to shut down, my router's ip address would change or my WIFI signal between the cell phone and router would get disrupted.

The new ip camera is proving to be much more reliable. It uses an internet cloud connection so router ip no more a problem. I ran a 100 foot Ethernet cable to it so no more wifi problem and it won't shut off for no apparent reason. Setting it up didn't in as smoothly as instructed but I was able to get it working. I can view Ashley's vital stats on my computer or thru an app on my cell phone while I'm away from home. Love it!

Pretty slick setup Lee.

I'd love to see the look on anyone's face who hacks into that Wi-Fi feed and tries to figure out just what they are looking at ! :D

Very nice!
I am betting the setup issues had to do with the Chinenglish instructions!! I have a couple outdoor security cams set up and the challenge with those was translating the translation. Luckily there were other users that were nice enough to post the actual set up instructions in the reviews of the cameras.

You mention an internet cloud connection, does that mean you don't have to mess with port forwarding on your router?

I use Foscams, three in the barn and four in the house. $70 each. Cat 5e wired as wireless is squirrely. Good resolution by day and acceptable IR by night. I port forward from the router (Netgear 6300) and yes I have a dynamic IP but it never seems to change. The system is, Cablevision modem, Netgear router, switch (no hubs please) and the house cameras. Allied Telesyn switches (100 baseT so on Ebay they are next to nothing). Barn, 300' cat 5e, switch, another 300' cat 5e switch and then wires to the barn camera. When horses get colic the owners watch all night and last year caught I real issue and saved an animal. No DVR though.

Cheap and dependable and better than the Samsclub systems that I have tried. I hate having to depend on Samsungs website as when they think the systems is out of date they just bring the site down. I am always looking for a better systems at a reasonable cost but that is where the technology is right now if you're on a horse farmers budget.

I tried the FF system but the string froze in the winter and the cocoa tins rusted out.

I think these cheapie cameras are all made by the same chinese mfg. and the only difference is the interface software. I paid about the same, I think $65 before shipping costs.

I used one brand at the church and another brand here at home and they were the same once you got logged into them.

A pic from this morning on the one mounted on the garage about 150' away. I have it monitoring the trail coming from the state forest since we get lost hunters once in a while this time of year. It is connected wireless to the router and it has been solid. I tried putting it about 50' further out but the wireless signal was too weak. I need to aim this one a little better.

Let me get my head around this = your running 600 feet from the ISP modem to the cam / using two 300 foot legs of cat5 and two {Allied Telesyn} switches
and it works?

Thank you for the kind words fellas!

Coal newbie that's quite the elaborate set up! Wow!

The camera was $40 and the 100 foot Ethernet was $30

Correct, no port forwarding or router ip address issues :)

Too much time with the LV hottie, you need to pay attention.

The modem first goes to a netgear 6300. The maximum length for a leg is 300 meters(330') but at one time 360' worked. Then you need to introduce a switch and then you can go another 300', then a switch and then another 300'. In fact originally I used monoprice indoor cable slung outside and despite ice and snow it worked for 5 years. NO speed loss.

The buildings are 300' apart and in the winter wireless just does not operate well. Some of this system is 10 years old and has survived howling winter winds, ice, snow and power surges.

The feed not available is from a LV showgirls dressing room - after all, this is a family channel.. HAHAHAHAHA, I am a riot.

As I have three large areas to heat (13,500 sq ft) that are so far apart that is why a EFM 1300 would not work, granite ridges and heating losses. So it's POH stoves and a few of them to boot - LOVE IT.

Outstanding Help

Thank-you -- I foresee a hi-speed connection for unending streaming on the PC in the old shop :P

switches like this???

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Allied-Telesyn-AT-FS705L- ... 3f3db1b142

Then do you use just the center ports or do you use the in and out for management?

Yep, one in and four out. If I can help you design your system let me know. There are plenty of smart guys around here, start a thread and we will all pitch in. You have to admit the price is right. Don't put the switches in backwards or else you will get ghost flow ...hahhaahahaha. BTW if pricing is an issue cheaper routers can be substituted or even the cable modem supplied will suffice for hard wire. Use Foscam 18w cameras not the 21 series as they are on a different band and anyway not 720p. Amazon about $63. If you have 2 buildings that are less than about 100' and wish to go wireless you can bridge two routers. You are a brilliant man and it will be easy for you. At the end of the string you can even put in a a wireless access point and bring up the whole shop. I like Netgear routers and extenders as mixing manufacturers can be an issue. However, for speed stay hard wired. We stream live Amazon Prime movies at the end of a 900' run. 100baseT is plenty.

I recently had some issues with the Trendnet camera. It figures, since it was out of production when I bought it. It worked good in the beginning but then it would take several attempts to bring in the video feed when I wasn't on the home network. Occasionally it wouldn't at all. Finally, it just didn't work.

So, I upgraded to a D-Link model DCS-933L. This camera has it's own phone app, which connects to the D-Link Cloud. No fancy port forwarding on the router OR dynamic public IP changes to deal with. I got it installed yesterday and was able to bring up a live video stream on command every time I summoned it to do so. No problems whatsoever, except for some issues with configuration and the router during installation. But since I had it installed and working, it's been 100% reliable so far.

Below is a picture of the set up and a screen shot of what I see on the smart phone.

Just thought I would pass this along in case some of you are interested in off site monitoring.
