Fred,
You remind me of a gentleman who happened to be from another country than this one, who owned a small "Try and Save" convenience store in our little Town (Groton). One evening, I stopped in for a few items and I happened to notice somebody had left a flyer on a countertop that was inviting the general public to a pscycic reading. I picked it up and said, "Hey there Charlie, you going in for this stuff now?"
He looked up from his Lottery Tickets, frowned and said "Nooooo, those people clazy!" I told him "clazy people everywhere". He replied; "More clazy here than there" as he pointed to a map of the country where he used to live.
I choose not to argue.
Thanks for the warm welcome folks!

Downstate here - Westchester County.
Researching before we start. We have an original Richardson Boynton "Perfect" unit. Looking to restore it this year and hopefully, start utilizing it next winter.

From way up north! Half hour from the border, beautiful country up here, so glad that anthracite can make its way up here and for only 300 a ton.

Hotblast,
Many, many years ago, I spent one collegiate year in Canton. I agree with you; New York State it is indeed beautiful, despite it's proximity to the Northern Polar Ice Cap. But when I left that town in late May of that year, I decided never to return. Too blasted cold for this old guy. Instead, I decided; to remain south of the New York Turnpike from there on.
The criteria used in making that decision was that it'll never be that cold and we'll never experience that much snow, whilst this far below that particular latitude. Har!

I spent 4 winters in Potsdam. The first December I was there it was -30 one morning the week before Xmas. My car was one of the only ones that started...thanks to dad giving me that monster John Deere battery and some synthetic oil.

We've hit -34 here in this part of the CNY hills,.... and I'm south of Rt90 by almost 40 miles. We hit -20 twice this week.
We average about 5 degrees colder temps than the east side of the Adirondacks from Saratoga up to Glens Falls.
And one of the coldest places in NY state outside the northern Adirondacks is Mount Vision - about 15 miles east of me going toward Cooperstown.

Aye ! `Tis true yet sad that "Irony"; oft times is one of the meanest of creatures to flourish within the minds of men who believe they might be wise enough to make a desicion that won't come back and bite em in the arse.
As for me, I should have continued southward a long ways, a long time ago.

Hello New Yorkers,
I am from Bighamton, but I guess you could never guess that from my screen name. I just put in a Harman Stoker last year and love it. I have learned som much from this forum, it drives my wife nuts. On the flip side my grandson loves the daily trips to the basement after dinner to tend the stove.

I had the opportunity to move to Florida last winter due to the passing of a wealthy relative. I turned it down without a second thought. What is even sicker is that I am ready for winter again and would love to light my mica stove if it was not close to 90*. I guess there is no hope, I am destined to freeze to death and will be found face down in a snow drift.
