BS or Questionable BS....Has anyone ever produced a thermo-mechanical(not electric) damper for the flue? Similar to a heat riser on a car but, closes with heat build-up and helps retain heat and suppress the fire. It will take a smaller thickness of coil spring and a smaller counterweight. But is it feasible? Could a similar piece of equipment be made for air intake?(using an air foil sensor?) Could it be balanced to give optimally efficient fire? Hey! They make fans that make electricity from heat...why not?
Let's give it to Mikey...he'll build it...he builds everything!
I have electric versions on the boilers at work.

Those come stock on many stoves since back as early as the 1970's...maybe earlier.
Not on the flue outlet, but on the inlet air...works just as well, "what can't get in...can't get out".

AFAIK there is no "Automatic Pipe Damper" for the exhaust gas path. However, something similar (Uh Oh ) is manufactured that Almost (Uh Oh ) does what you are looking to do. It's called a barometric damper.Badger Freezer wrote:BS or Questionable BS....Has anyone ever produced a thermo-mechanical(not electric) damper for the flue? I believe what the OP is referring to would be called a stack damper, which serves a different purpose than a barometric damper.

Boilers at his work are Not solid fuel.
Gas and oil stop producing heat as soon as the controls signal it to stop...Not So with solid fuels.
Blocking off a the breech of a solid fuel appliance will get you a whole lot of Carbon Monoxide in a hurry.

Sure is.scalabro wrote:Is this not the hand fired section?
Just because the boilers at work can, doesn't make it possible here.I have electric versions on the boilers at work.
Principals of solid fuel fires don't know the boundaries of "only Boilers"

I wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel. I only asked if it were ever done. I have my answer. End of my inquiry.
Thanks everyone for your input.
It's good to know there are caring people out there, concerned with the welfare of everyone, when it comes to the safe operation of a coal stove.
I really like this forum.
