Well done Tim. Don't forget your skid pads before you drop your stove down. you'll be sliding it some to line up your smoke pipe, and don't want to scar your new tiles.

Joe,

I wont forget the skid pads. I told my wife last night, we need to get chimney swept and complete the install and then I want the white stuff to fall so we can enjoy and learn how to burn coal in a hand fed stove. I will be using all the tips/techniques that you have described in your "diary" as well as what you told me when we came out to get the stove.

When I light the 1st fire in it Joe, you will be the 1st to know and I will report back on how the Surdiac performs.

And when you "do" lite Tim, do as Scott and others have recommended. "Matchlight". I'll never do wood again. I can't believe I didn't listen the 1st few seasons. Woodfire, minimum 1-2 hours B4 you can fill the hopper. Matchlight? Maybe 15 mins. (If I'm remembering right. The end of my diary spells it out.)

Update....

I got the stove on the hearth and centered and made sure distances from combustibles were adequate. 8-) (chairs in picture below will be moved) Now to clean the chimney and get some black stove pipe to complete the install.

Good evening everyone,

I finally found the time to install my stove pipe tonight. I will install manometer tomorrow night. I am all ready for the chilly weather.

Very clean and professional looking installation Tim. (you beat me). I see you got the lower baffling on straight. Something I never bothered with. Great job.

Way to go CS. I like your field stone. Do you have the lower cover for your ash pan? I had a spare parts stove, but don't think I kept the tin. Maybe Tim has an extra.

CS,

I like your install! Very cottage looking/feel. I may have a spare ash door cover in the box of spare parts Joe gave me. I will look when I get home from work tonight. Let me know if you need it.

As an update I installed my manometer last night and am officially ready to light the Surdiac up when temps start to drop! Now I need to re-hook up the Keystoker K-Lite in the basement.

I do have it, I stripped the stove down to maintenance him before I brought him in. However, its a little bent from where the movers dropped it 2 years back, so it doesn't snap in well. (Oddly enough movers don't believe you when you tell them it's 400 pounds. I didn't go after them because they moved around 3000 pounds of extra stuff over my official navy quota.) So for now I'm not messing with it. He's going to need some new parts soon, the heat exchanger isn't in great shape, and my hopper is on the way out. I already know what the pain from those two items will be from Myer's... So I'm makin' with the positive waves Moriarty. You might note that I refer to the stove as a "he". This is due to his name, Calcifer. My wife named him after hearthfire character from "Howl's Moving Castle" voiced by Billy Crystal.

Yea the hearth was a selling point for me... its in the middle of the kitchen as well. As for the rug, that's an honest to god Kashmir woven rug I got in Bahrain.

Good Morning Everyone!

With temps dropping in the 40's the last few days here in CNY, the wife tells me it is getting close to start the up the stove. The remainder of the week, the forecast says highs in the 50s during the day, lows in the 40s at night or even 30s... I will be starting the Surdiac tonight and giving it a test run.

I'll keep everyone posted!

So Tim, have you gotten your winters supply of pea coal yet? Curious what the going rate is this season. Seeing oil is so cheap, will the coal industry follow suit?

Joe,

I was going to pick up a few bags tonight from local coal supplier, but the owner was out on a delivery. I have 3 ton of rice in the basement for the koker but no pea as of yet. Since I was not able to pick up pea coal until tomorrow the test run is post poned

Hello everyone,

Tonight I finally lit the Surdiac. After some trial and error I got it going.
