How's Your Garden Doing?
I'm growing tomatoes and peppers in 5 gallon buckets for the first time. I can't say I know what I'm doing but I must be doing something right.
I have 16 tomatoes growing on this plant and it looks like another 47 or more are on the way. I started it from seeds I used from a tomato I bought at the market so I don't know what kind it is other then a beef steak kind, as in big and round.. can't wait to try the first one, it's growing so fast...

Real nice G
Thanks Fred, I'm starting to really get into this, maybe I'll grow indoors over the winter, I am learning you can keep a tomato plant going for a few years or more, some can grow 30 feet tall. I should have my basement stairs in soon so I could grow down there, maybe do Hydroponic.
It could be worth while, with 16 and 47 on the way thats 63, I bought one tomato today for $1.47 that would be $92 bucks worth of tomatoes, I'm starting to see the light..

Nice plants, grumpy.
We put up 10 quarts of spaghetti sauce last week and we'll probably get another 10 this week. We planted mainly Amish Paste, although we do have a few Better Boy, and a few Beefsteak.
We put up 27 quarts of cabbage about a month ago, Zucchini is doing great (I love those on the grill). Hot peppers are doing well also.
Bell peppers are producing late this year, cucumbers aren't doing well either.

This year wifey wanted me to increase the height of our fencing around our garden (had 4ft fencing) because the deer just laughs at 4 ft fences.
So instead of making a disaster fence job, I installed motion activated sprinklers. I bought 3, 2 "Scarecows" and one Orbit.

I placed their bases into PVC pipe to increase their height and they have been doing the job.
Cheaper than new fencing, less obtrusive too.
I offered to stay up and shoot the deer with my crossbow but the wifey feels sorry for the deer.

My son and daughter-in-law live with a very high deer population, can't fence their rented place, and she also has had very good experience with those sprinklers.davidmcbeth3 wrote:I installed motion activated sprinklers. I bought 3, 2 "Scarecows" and one Orbit.
As for my garden, veggies (and annual flowers) have been slow this year, probably due to many cool nights in June and July -- often down in the lower 50s in June. Tomatoes are coming on strong but only just now am I getting some to eat. Mama groundhog got my first planting of lots of things, then I finally caught (with peaches) and relocated her, second planting is coming along well. Four baby groundhogs were much easier to catch than mama, just a little broccoli in the trap and they were dumb enough to pounce on it. Mama was very delicate taking the peaches, but she got too confident when I sliced them up, sat right in the trap and ate them, until she had to climb over the trigger to get the last one. Who says I'm not smarter than a groundhog?
Your too kind, I used to let them be but learned the hard way. Now if a Ground Hog gets anywhere near my house the rifle comes out and they die. They are nothing but trouble, take out one and prevent more down the road.
I took out one yesterday, he was the biggest fattest I have ever seen, he was real slow to move too.. He's food for the Turkey Buzzards now..
