I personally wish the bald eagle would be totally extinct !! It is bad enough fighting with hawks getting small animals (chickens, etc)& then to worry about the stupid eagle taking bigger animals (dogs, calves, lambs, & even young children ). One neighborhood near us has eagles hanging out ,they no longer can leave children or dogs in their fenced in back yards without eye on the sky supervision.

WH, I've always lived WAY off the beaten path & have never heard of an Eagle taking a kid. Very rare w/ calfs or lambs with the adults around. Squirrels, mice, snakes, woodchuck, rabbits, etc. you betcha. PS-I know they're not gonna take any of my dogs. They're country!

Immature bald (we think) in my locust trees on my birthday. Smaller birds came and went, didn't seem to care if the eagle was there or not.
Made me wish I had a better camera.
The electrician's helper who was here later in the month does a lot of ice fishing, and they throw the junk fish out on the ice for the eagles. He said at one point he counted 26 bald eagles on the ice. (Annabessacook Lake, for those who want the local flavor. Actually it was a badly polluted lake 50 years ago, so maybe those fish aren't so good for the eagles after all.)

Yep.. Ben Franklin lobbied very hard for the Turkey to be the national bird. Thank goodness cooler and more sober heads prevailed as turkeys while pretty to look at, have to be one of the dumbest animals on this planet.samhill wrote:They are beautiful birds, their pretty common place around here but I still enjoy watching them. Just think there was serious talk of making the turkey the national bird. Glad they got something right.

Coming up 84 from CT in to MA, we're greeted with a "Welcome to Massachusetts" sign, complete with a turkey painted on it.ONEDOLLAR wrote: .... as turkeys while pretty to look at, have to be one of the dumbest animals on this planet.
How ironic.
Every time I pass, I say, "That's the portrait of our state legislature!"

Last year just before Christmas, I spotted one in the trees on the southbound lane of the Henry Hudson Parkway just north of the GWB in NYC
