You're on that ragged edge DD. It's kinda nice to have alternate options for heating, isn't it? I guess it comes down to how much you want to "play" with your coal equipment. Me personally am looking fwd to getting my "new" G111 up and running, so I can begin to learn the ropes on this stove.

Upside of oil don't to tend it and cheaper. Downside it never really gets rid of the drafty feeling as does not heat soak the plaster walls that are ideal for coal being a big heat sink. Oil will go up at some point and make the coal the best deal and will burn it then, right now it is money in the bank and if the boiler quits at night I am only 30 minutes from warming up. For me oil needs to get to 2.40 to break even.

I like the 404 but it is very simple to run so not much to play with a set and forget it. MPD if a lot of draft and cold out open air to suit needs and see ya in 12 hours LOL

Let it go out with more 68 degree days on the way. The plaster still nice and warm so very comfortable and tomorrow night will tell if a bad idea or not. I don't have the time to play with it right now and things slow down a bit in a month and more time then. Oil is super cheap and less than coal here so pointless to spend more money and time when the shop is busy.

Had the 2310 running so low that when it warmed up to 78 yesterday I lost the draft and the fire went out. Now I know where that ragged edge is at.

Will leave it off today but will relight when I get home. Supposed to get to 45 tonight and a low of 38 tomorrow. Momma will Definitely say something if I don't. She was talking to one of her friends who asked her how she liked the coal stove. She said it was wonderful. They asked her if we had it running and she told her we did.

She asked how did we determine when to start the stove?

My wife replied. "All I had to do was say it seems to be a bit chilly in here. One hour later he had the stove running and pumping out heat." They both smiled and went on with their conversation.

Yep...I'm well trained and I like it. :D

blrman,it's nice for you to have someone who makes that decision ,i have to make my own decision as to when we need heat as I am the one who dislikes the cold the most.I thought I had lost my stove last nite, but it revived... again. :D Guess I will just keep it going. :)

I will be relighting the Surdiac tonight, wife said she was chilly last night. I let it go out Monday night as temps looked like they were warming back up...

And here in central PA, 1/2 mile from the I81/I78 split , for the second morning in a row,we had ice on the plant leaves in the garden. Low temp Sun showed 38* ,this a/m 39*,this reading taken from a window frame mounted thermometer on our porch.

Still no frost up here by the lake, was 54℉ this morning. High today was 77℉

I did start up the coal fire in the cooking range a couple of days ago. Made BBQ pulled pork to take to a party. Cooked the pork shoulder for 16 hrs, low and slow in the oven. With coal in it, it is easier to keep the temp down in the oven.

Have not had a coal fire in the house yet.

Randy

The end of gardening is certainly very near,as is the end of the non-heating season.

You are sort of saved by the lake and it's as of yet temperate waters. I bet it can get downright raw when when that canadian air/polar express bears down on those in proximity to the lake. As for me, I have been on the very edge of frost three times in the past two weeks but the days recover to the mid 60's. Today touched 70. Wednesday looks like the start of temps falling off. My wife heard of the possibility of some light snow later this week. Basement DSM burns on @ 275*. Mano is steady at .02, basement warm, floors warm and doubtful it is adding more than a couple degrees to the upstairs.

We've had three frost up here so far, hit 72 today, 65 right now outside, possibly snow this weekend.
