I am curious about whether the chimney is rusting or maybe some residue (left over from mfg. process?) on the surface is rusting.
Wait a little bit and see if the spot you cleaned rusts over again, if so then maybe its defective.

You have the AC right there to keep the chimney moist all summer, with the gasses sitting on stainless moist all summer. Recipe for rust. I would try spraying the stainless down with one of the solutions that neutralizes the coals affects each spring when done with coal. or paint it like has been mentioned, or reroute or block the vent as has been mentioned. Like Fred said, the SS is crap, at least the poorer grades like most of us use. Its the nature of the beast.

Any cold enough surface can condense heated vapors laden with combustion by-products that come in contact with that cold condensing surface.2004blackwrx wrote:I am looking for ideas to help prevent future rusting of the SS chimney. My best Idea right now is to remove the coal vent top hat and put a 90 on it pointing away from the SS chimney.
Iron is in most coal fuels to a varying degree. The fact that it can be removed easily with steel wool makes it only a localized nusiance stain and not a testament of metal quality.
Now as for future prevention, redirect gases/vapors or add any type barrier between stainless to stop contact of vapors.

Go at it with steel wool or metal polish, then coat with Fluid Film or LPS3. Problem solved.

Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunately if it poor quality SS I am stuck with it now. So I have to prevent it from rusting. I like the ideas I have heard so far. I can definitely build a barrier of sorts and redirect exhaust with a elbow to see if that helps. I probably will build a temporary barrier for now to see how it works before I build a better looking more permanent solution. As far as moving vent I cant do that because the other side of house has a window and I wouldn't want to drill anymore holes in my foundation. Lastly, in the spring I will give it a good cleaning and spray it down with a fluid film.
