Installed the mini fire pot in the 404 today and lit her off. I used a small amount of matchlight charcoal to get things started, ten minutes later I added a little coal. Easiest fire I ever started. I would guess the total amount of coal to fill it up was 10-12lbs. This will be an experiment for heat output vs. length of burn, not sure if either will be enough when it gets really cold.

It was an option when Crane was still in business. I got this one from from another forum member who wasn't going to use it, thanks again Dave. :D At this point because it's so easy to change out to the full size fire pot I thought I would have some fun with it.

That small pot won't make enough heat when the outside temps plummet, but it will be interesting to see how easy it is to idle the fire for the chilly nites/warm days.Fire looks good. I just looked again, you have to take the big pot out to install the 1/2 pot ?? It should have been made to fit in the big pot, much easier to switch back to the big pot, just lift the little pot & add coal to the fire.No wonder it wasn't a popular option as I recall dcrane saying.

Coalvet, the desing of that mini fire pot is super.
If the room to be heated is a small one it will work very well.
Also during Fall and Spring not very cold days it will also work well.
My Golden Bride has a small fire pot about as yours and for the described uses it's perfect. It can idle for 12 Hrs easily at 150/200F on a tea spoon of anthracite :D .
I hope you will be happy with your's. But if not you have an option.

Very interesting.

Scaling it off on the pictures, it looks like it holds about 1/3 the volume.

Hopefully, it'll still make enough heat volume to maintain a safe draft, yet allow being run slow enough to last over night.

Please be sure to update us on how well it works - burn times and room temps.

Paul

I see pretty short burn times in your future. But, very cool accessory you have there!

I am very happy to pass this along to someone that will use it for the price of gas to get here! I bought it on a whim and decided did not want to play with swapping fire box as my very bad back said no. I was X-rayed ages ago and told no 2 logical to fuse as all look like a large problem. Better to go to a person that will use and report. If DCrane wants to copy sure hope made available though had no interest when I asked him.
