Hey op, whats with the warming shelf on your DS? Is it a bolt on?
Stopped at the stove place yesterday where I got my DS many years ago. The had those anthra max stoves front and center. They looked cool. Reading the brochures they really don't outperform the 1600 in any way. They look a lot more pretty. Have a few more features. Looks like their just trying to compete with some of the other flashy looking stoves on the market.
Funny, when I got my DS way back when very few people heard of them. Nice to see people talking and comparing notes about the DS.

Paisan,
here's a review thread by an advanced, multi stoves user here on forum of the Anthra-Max stove.
if you read far enough you will see him comment that the 1600 Circulator is the better stove.

Yes, it is an option from D.S.. It bolts on. Nice place to warm things. I bought it for looks, as well as function. I like it. Without the warming shelf, the stove looks un-finished. The warming shelf gives it character.Paisan wrote:Hey op, whats with the warming shelf on your DS? Is it a bolt on?

Nice. I'm going to look into that. Maybe put my water pots on that. That way I can load the hopper without removing the pots.oliver power wrote:Yes, it is an option from D.S.. It bolts on. [quote="oliver power What amazes me is how two stoves can be so close in build / operation, but couldn't be any further apart in the way they function / perform. The D.S. is definitely more finicky about everything, yet is capable of putting out good heat, silently. The HITZER doesn't care. With the HITZTER, if you want heat, dump any old coal in the hopper, and you've got heat.[/quote]
It's funny you should say that. With my ds 1500 and Hitzer 82, it is the opposite. But they are quite different beasts, the 82 and the 30-95.
I am curious, Oliver, how you are liking your 1600 now. I, too, cut back the draft on my 1500 and it has made a significant difference. I think the stove companies use -.06 for safety and liability reasons...

I'm liking my 1600 more and more as time moves on. It's a nice stove, however, it's a little bigger than I needed. I'm thinking the 1500, or even the 1400 would have been the better choice for more rapid circulation. Ya see; When the temps dipped low, I was able to run the 1600 hotter. Running it hotter (bright red to dull orange), the air coming out of the circulator tubes is more forceful, which I'm sure would circulate the air more rapidly. The D.S. 1600 is not ideal for my shop environment, as it's very slow to recover after having the overhead door open. No Doubt, the HITZER way out performs the D.S. when it comes to rapid circulation.
Another factor with the D.S. is; it's designed to heat a space up to temp, and hold it there. If I'm not in the shop, I don't want to hold it at higher temps. Especially once I open the wall, doubling the shop size. Should I turn the dial down, the stove is starved for air till the room temp lowers enough to open the primary........and that's quite a long time to starve the coal bed of air. I could add a little air through the ash pan door like the HITZERs. Should I want to bring the temp back up in the shop, it takes a while to get the fire kicked back up, and air circulated.
