Sorry, my internet was out for a couple days so I missed Monday. below is what I recorded for that day.
Meter reading on Monday 2/1/2016, 1758.9 - 1750.8 = 8.1 hours x 12.5 = 102.25 pounds for the past 2 days, 50.6 pounds per day. 8 hours and 00 minutes by the clock.
Meter reading today, 1767.4 - 1750.8 = 8.5 hours x 12.5 = 106.25 pounds for the past 2 days, 53.1 pounds per day. 8 hours and 25 minutes by the clock = 52.5 pounds per day. Highs in the low 60's.
The coal is still go'in down at a good clip. At least it looks that way. No clinker today! -Don

Don,
How is that barrel in the bin system working out, it looks pretty good.
What do you do when the coal in the bin is down from the barrel top?

Then you shovel it into the barrel.coal stoker wrote:Don,

If the barrel wasn't there, when the bin gets low, the auger won't feed. You then have to pile coal on the end of the auger every day and hope it doesn't run out.
It has been pointed out that it would be better to cut a hole in the bottom of the barrel, set it on blocks above the auger. Doing it this way would allow the coal to flow under the barrel and into the auger. When the bin gets to low to flow into the auger, you put another block or two under the barrel to block off the bottom. Then start filling the barrel.

I pulled the ash pan today. The barrel is about half full now. I wonder what happened to the clinker? Haven't seen it for a while. -Don

Meter reading today, 1786.8 - 1775.7 = 11.1 hours x 12.5 = 138.75 pounds for the past 2 days, 69.4 pounds per day. 11 hours and 2 minutes by the clock = about 68.75 pounds per day. Highs in the about 40, about 20 at night. At least 3 hours of that run time was to make DHW for cleaning radiators.
There's the clinker! Filled the barrel again. -Don

Your right! This is fun! This Van Wert runs great! It just keeps going no matter what. Only runs between 4 and 6 hours a day!Scottscoaled wrote:Your having all the fun!!!
Meter reading today, 1796.0 - 1786.8 = 9.2 hours x 12.5 = 115 pounds for the past 2 days, 57.5 pounds per day. 9 hours and 10 minutes by the clock = about 57.4 pounds per day. Highs in the about 40, about 20 at night.
OK, I guess I can trust the hour meter. It was only slightly off one time, that could have been me though. I won't need the clock any more for this project. One very small clinker. The Van Wert does run very, very well. It was fairly easy to dial in, holds a fire forever and I don't have to put coal in it very often. Timer is set for 1 minute every hour, I would reduce it to every 1.5 hours if I could.
I was worried about 2 things on this conversion, the lack of room for ashing and rice coal fines build up. So far, neither has been a problem.
I LOVE this Boiler!

It's now heating 2 radiators in the living room along with everything else. Coldest night so far and it's 75 degrees in here!

Meter reading today, 1820.3 - 1796.0 = 24.3 hours x 12.5 = 303.75 pounds for the past 4 days, 75.9 pounds per day. Wintery weather this week, going down to about zero tonight.
Filled the barrel up tonight. One small clinker. I'll be stay'in warm tonight!

Meter reading today, 1827.6 - 1820.3 = 7.3 hours x 12.5 = 91.25 pounds for the past 1 day. A bit more than usual, but we expected that with the radiators pushing heat into a new area all night and most of the day. Overnight temps down to zero and a little below, with significant wind.

Two tiny clinkers today. I did a slight air adjustment yesterday, 7 to 6. Ash is a little redder today. I refilled the barrel today. The bin is getting down there. Looks like I have enough to get through the next few weeks. Winter should be about done by then down here. When I run out I can switch back over to the GJ/EFM in the garage. -Don
